Tom Ganley, an automobile dealer from northeastern Ohio, has kicked off a campaign for the Republican nomination to succeed George V. Voinovich in the Senate.
In formally announcing his campaign for the seat of the retiring
Voinovich, Ganley is signaling that he is undeterred by the GOP establishment's support of
Rob Portman, a former U.S. House member from the Cincinnati area who later served as a top budget and trade official in the administration of President George W. Bush.
Ganley's announcement, which he made in his suburban Cleveland hometown of Brecksville, wasn't a surprise. In March he filed a statement of candidacy and statement of organization.
Ganley described himself as "a businessman, not someone who ever thought about being a professional politician."
Ganley, the president and chief executive officer of the Cleveland-based Ganley Automative Group, is personally wealthy and told The Columbus Dispatch that his campaign will be "very well-funded."
Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher and Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner are seeking the Democratic nomination.
