Former Republican Sen.
John E. Sununu announced Wednesday he will not run for New Hampshire's open Senate seat in 2010, forcing Republicans to continue their search for a top flight candidate.
"Representing New Hampshire in the United States Senate is a great honor, but effective public service is much more than just a desire to hold office," Sununu said in a statement.
"It's essential that the timing fit both personally and professionally." He noted the technology firms where he has committed to work and the sacrifice a campaign would place on his family as reasons for not jumping back into politics.
Despite Sununu's ouster last fall, by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, Sununu would have been an important recruit for Republicans, who have yet to field a major candidate in the race.
Sununu's decision places additional focus on state Attorney General Kelly Ayotte who is rumored to be considering a bid for the seat.
Republican businessman Fred Tausch also has been airing campaign-style ads in the state, but his commercials are related to his grassroots organization and he has yet to announce a campaign for office.
The seat became a high-profile 2010 race when Republican Sen. Judd Gregg announced in February he would not run for re-election.
Democrats have coalesced behind Rep. Paul W. Hodes, who does not appear to face strong Democratic opposition in the 2010 Senate race.
CQ Politics rates the race a Tossup.

In a way this is too bad, because Sununu II was one of the brightest and most reasonable GOP members in the US Senate. He wouldn't have lost his seat were it not for the huge anti-Bush tide.
However, he only got there in the first place because his father was Governor, and I personally feel nepotism is dangerous to democracy.
Regardless, Sununu II will run for office again. Every time a statewide or national office in New Hampshire becomes open, he'll be asked to run for it (that's one of the perks of nepotism). Eventually, he will.

Who didn't see this coming? You're only polling in the mid 30's, having already served in the senate. Then your Pappa has to come out and speak for you...
