Former state party Republican chairman Robin Smith kicked off her House campaign in Tennessee Wednesday, adding her name to the open field forming to succeed Republican Rep. Zach Wamp.

Smith resigned her position as chairman last month to begin preparing her campaign. Wamp announced in January his intention to run for governor in 2010.

Smith joins a Republican field that already includes Tim Gobble, Bradley County Sheriff, Attorney Chuck Fleischmann, who officially announced his campaign last week, and other Republicans who have announced plans to run for the GOP-leaning seat.

Voters in the 3rd District supported Republican John McCain for president last fall with 62 percent of the vote to 37 percent for Democrat Barack Obama.

Still, Democrats are hoping to wage a competitive race. Former state commissioner of Commerce and Insurance Paula Flowers tops the early field of Democratic candidates.
