Leticia Van de Putte
In taking herself out of the 2010 Texas governor's race on Tuesday, Democratic state Sen.
Leticia Van de Putte encouraged one of her state Senate colleagues to make the race.
Van de Putte, who represents the San Antonio region, said in a statement that she did not want to run for governor because she did not want her family to endure what Van de Putte described as the Republicans' "scorched earth 'say anything to win' vicious attacks against political opponents."
In the same statement, Van de Putte said that she will support Democratic state Sen. Kirk Watson if he decides to run for governor. "While staying true to Democratic values, he is a bipartisan pragmatic leader solidly focused on addressing the priorities of all Texans," Van de Putte said of Watson, a former mayor of Austin, the Texas capital.
Van de Putte's announcement came one day before Tom Schieffer, a businessman and former U.S. ambassador to Australia and Japan during George W. Bush's presidency, announces a Democratic campaign for governor.
Republican Gov. Rick Perry is seeking a third four-year term and will be opposed in the primary next March by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Senator Van de Putte once said that she liked the way Governor Perry looked in his jeans. Is this relevant? Maybe not. But it is notable.
