The Republican campaign against Democratic Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, a first-term Democrat from northwestern Pennsylvania's 3rd District. will not include Brian Lasher after all.

Lasher, an Erie social studies teacher, had been the only announced Republican candidate.

Lasher had organized a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission in April. But Lasher's campaign manager told his Facebook supporters Sunday night that Lasher "loves his students and he loves what he does in the classroom."

Lasher wrote on his campaign Web site Monday that "my organization and fundraising is not where it needs to be in order to create the momentum to carry me while I continue to teach."

Republicans are promising a vigorous challenge against Dahlkemper, whose defeat of Rep. Phil English in the 2008 election was one of 14 victories by a Democratic challenger over a Republican incumbent. Her win contributed to the overall Democratic gain of 21 House seats in the 2008 general election.

Steve Fisher, an insurance agent, recently formed an "exploratory" committee to run for the seat, though he doesn't have candidacy papers on file yet with the FEC. State Sen. Jane Earll is a potential candidate.

Pennsylvania's 3rd District broke nearly evenly between Barack Obama and John McCain in the 2008 presidential balloting, according to my calculations.
