New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney previewed some attack lines for her prospective primary challenge to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in a pre-recorded interview airing on local New York City television Thursday night. The station posted a clip of the interview on its Web site.
Characterizing Gillibrand as more interested in politics than legislating, Maloney told NY1, "I think that she's working hard, but what are the accomplishments?"
"Some people work hard to get elected, some people work hard to do a job, to help people," she added.
Maloney also hit Gillibrand for her shifting stance on hot-button social issues likes gun control and immigration since her Senate appointment in January. Ask why she is considering challenging Gililbrand, Maloney said, "Principles are very important and it's troubling to me that she could change her position on so many issues that are important to the country and the city and the state."
The Manhattan-based congresswoman refused to say what her time line was for making an announcement.
While the Maloney mulls her strategy, however, Gillibrand is piling up endorsements and traveling the state touting her agenda to help New York families. The new senator, appointed by Gov. David A. Paterson to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton when the latter became secretary of State, has made strides in winning over once skeptical constituencies.
