Kentucky Republican Rand Paul, the son of Texas congressman and 2008 presidential candidate Ron Paul, has organized an "exploratory" campaign for the Senate seat of Republican incumbent Jim Bunning.

Rand Paul, an eye surgeon from Bowling Green, disclosed his plans Thursday night on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC program and in a press release on Friday.

"The Republican Party's lost their mojo," Paul said on MSNBC. He added, "We've lost our believability. It's not that our message is so bad, but we've said we're fiscal conservatives, and then we doubled the deficit."

It's doubtful that Bunning and Paul will wind up being opponents. Paul told Maddow that he has "gone around the state saying good things about" Bunning, and his press release praised Bunning for voting against the law that created the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which opponents refer to as a "bailout."

Bunning has repeatedly said he will seek re-election, even after feuding with GOP leaders and giving his blessing to Trey Grayson, Kentucky's Republican Secretary of State, to begin organizing a Senate campaign.

The Democratic field includes Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, who nearly beat Bunning in 2004, and state Attorney General Jack Conway.

Wonder if Paul will attract some of the money and devoted online following that his father did during his high-profile but unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

  1. An eye surgeon? At least we know he's not squeamish. But he's a bit of an unknown or cypher to most including me. If he's a full-blown libertarian then forget it. America needs to become more like The Netherlands, not Somalia.
