Add two more Republicans to the mix of candidates for South Carolina governor. State Sen. Larry Grooms of Berkeley, S.C., confirmed to CQ Politics this week that he is officially a candidate. He said he likely will have an official campaign launch this summer, and in the meantime will be working to build up his campaign infrastructure.

State Rep. Nikki Haley, meanwhile, said this week that she is considering the race but has not yet made a decision.

Grooms, an ally of Republican Gov. Mark Sanford in his fight against accepting some federal stimulus money, had been mulling the race for the past few months. He said he made the decision to run after receiving ample encouragement during his exploratory outreach efforts around the state.

Grooms acknowledged, however, that he is in for a tough race to replace Sanford, who is prevented by term-limits from running again in 2010. U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett and Furman University professor Brent Nelsen have both declared their candidacies .

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and Attorney General Henry McMaster are also likely to run for the Republican nomination.

A bid by Haley, a staunch anti-tax advocate who became the first Indian-American to serve in a state legislature when she was elected in 2004, would further heighten the competition among the state's conservative voters.

Republicans enjoy a political advantage in the state but that hasn't deterred a handful of Democrats from also mounting a bid. Democratic lawyer and businessman Mullins McLeod jumped into the race in April, and State Sens. Vincent Sheheen and Robert Ford have also declared their intentions to run. House Minority Leader Harry Ott is reportedly interested, as well.
