It looks like there will be a rematch of the competitive 2008 House race in South Carolina's 2nd District: Democrat Rob Miller announced Wednesday that he will make another attempt to unseat Republican Rep. Joe Wilson, whom he held to a modest 54 percent to 46 percent win in the strongly Republican-leaning central and south district.

"For too long, Congressman Wilson has been part of the problem in Washington," Miller said in a written statement. "Instead of saying 'no' to creating good jobs in South Carolina, we need to invest in our future. In Congress, I will fight for policies that create jobs, support small businesses, and rein in out-of-control spending."

As that statement implies, Miller is prepared to run on a platform that strikes a middle ground between President Obama's economic agenda and the staunch Republican opposition in which Wilson has participated.

Running as at least a center-right Democrat is a necessity if Miller -- a former Marine Corps captain and Iraq War veteran -- hopes to better his 2008 outcome. Voters in the 2nd District favored Republican presidential nominee John McCain by 54 percent to 45 percent over Obama, and gave a robust 60 percent to President George W. Bush in his 2004 re-election contest.

If Wilson is concerned at the possibility of another tough campaign, it's not reflected in his fundraising, which was not especially aggressive during the year's first quarter. The four-term incumbent raised less than $100,000 and ended March with $58,000 in the bank.

That, nonetheless, trumped Wilson, who reported just more than $4,000 in cash on hand at the end of the first quarter.
