A recent report of Democratic Rep. Jane Harman's wiretapped conversation has drawn some criticism and calls for an investigation, but now Harman also appears to face a potential 2010 challenge from the left in California's 36th District.
Democrat Marcy Winograd said she is collecting donations for a 2010 rematch with Harman.
"The grassroots have been dissatisfied with her record for a long time," Winograd said. "I think the latest... is just icing on the cake."
A Congressional Quarterly story published April 19 reported that Harman was recorded offering to lobby on behalf of two former officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) who faced espionage-related charges.
Winograd said she takes issue with Harman's self-description as "the best Republican in the Democratic party" and Winograd believes district voters share her opinion. Harman appeals to the swing voters in her district with moderate fiscal stands and liberal social views.
Winograd garnered 37.5 percent against Harman in the 2006 primary. Winograd said she finds those results encouraging because she spent just three months campaigning.
"Given I was able to garner the percentage in such a short time span, I think that there is a real possibility with a year of campaigning, I could defeat her- and she needs to be defeated," Winograd said.
According to a CQ Politics analysis, Barack Obama received 64 percent of the vote in the 36th District, which takes in southwest Los Angeles County.
