Pennsylvania Rep. Jim Gerlach says he's being encouraged to consider running in the Republican Senate primary.
Gerlach has been preparing for a possible gubernatorial bid in 2010.
But now that Sen. Arlen Specter has become a party-switcher, Gerlach said his phone lines have been burning up with inquiries about his interest in running instead for the Republican nomination for Specter's seat.
It seems some in the GOP want him to take on former Rep. Patrick J. Toomey, whose lead in recent polling among the Republican primary electorate prompted Specter's party-switch.
Specter would start out as a heavy favorite in a general election against Toomey.
Enter Gerlach, some Republicans hope.
Gerlach said he hasn't given a lot of thought to a Senate race at this point. But he isn't shutting the door, either.
"Don't rule anything out in life," he said.

The only thing I rule out in this life is the Republican party.
