Sen. Christopher J. Dodd's shaky status in Connecticut hasn't scared away too many donors, it seems.

The five-term Democratic incumbent reported just over $1 million in total receipts in the first three months of 2009, his report to the Federal Election Commission states.

Dodd ended March with $1.4 million in the bank.

Dodd's cash is likely to give him an edge against two Republican challengers, former Rep. Rob Simmons and state Sen. Sam Caligiuri, who both announced they would run for the seat in March.

Recent polls show Dodd trailing both men in hypothetical match-ups, but neither Simmons nor Caligiuri has the name recognition or fundraising clout of Connecticut's senior senator.

It's been a rocky few months for Dodd, who received a barrage of negative coverage after it was revealed that it was his amendment to the stimulus bill that had been altered at the request of the Treasury Department to prevent the government from blocking loans paid out to executive from bailed-out insurance company AIG. The senator was already under fire for his ties to the financial industry during the economic meltdown as well as a special mortgage deal he received from struggling mortgage giant Countrywide Financial.

While he's not out of the woods by any means, Dodd's fundraising shows his donors and support base have not abandoned him.

"This lays a solid foundation to build a strong, grassroots campaign that will remind the people of Connecticut that Sen. Dodd has been fighting on their side and will continue to fight on their behalf," campaign manager Jay Howser said in a statement.
