On the heels of two major endorsements last week, additional big-name supporters are expected to step forward to support Democratic state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier's campaign for California's 10th District, his staff said Monday.
His spokeswoman Shara Perkins confirmed Monday that DeSaulnier is currently in Washington, D.C., participating in meetings related to his campaign and that notable endorsements are expected to be announced later this week.
DeSaulnier has already received perhaps the most coveted endorsement in the race- The current representative of California's 10th District, Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher, endorsed DeSaulnier as her successor last week. Tauscher has been tapped to serve as undersecretary of State for arms control and international security.
Democratic Rep. George Miller, whose 7th District is adjacent to the East Bay suburban 10th, also offered DeSaulnier his endorsement last week.
DeSaulnier is one of several potential candidates for the Democratic-leaning seat. Adriel Hampton, a Democrat and a municipal investigator for the San Francisco City Attorney's Office announced his intention March 23 to run for the 10th. And Democratic state Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan continues to be floated as a potential competitor.
Democratic state Assemblyman Tom Torkalson was discussed as a potential heavy-hitting candidate for the 10th, but Torkalson threw his support to DeSaulnier.
Additional candidates are rumored to be considering bids.
Democrats have historically held an advantage in the district. Last fall, Barack Obama outran Republican John McCain by a 32 percentage-point margin, according to CQ Politics' analysis of presidential votes by congressional district.
If Tauscher is confirmed by the Senate, she is expected to resign her House seat. Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would then be required by state election law to set a special election in which candidates of all parties will run on the same ballot.
