Time magazine posted a marvelous piece of journalism Thursday on the final days of the Bush-Cheney administration--and the final drama of their administration: Dick Cheney pressuring George W. Bush to pardon Scooter Libby, and Bush, with the backing of most of his aides, resisting Cheney. This was a conflict that threatened to ruin the relationship between Cheney, who wanted to protect the guy who took a bullet for him, and Bush, who didn't want to pardon Libby (after having commuted his prison sentence) because he believed that Libby had indeed lied to the FBI during the investigation of the Valerie Plame leak and feared that a last-minute pardon would taint his presidency (as did President Bill Clinton's out-the-door pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich). It's a telling tale, and it shows that Cheney, by the end of the administration, was isolated and off in a world of his own.
In response to the Time article, Cheney released a statement declaring Libby "an innocent man" and noting that Libby was not the source of the leak that outed Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA officer. But Cheney had it wrong: Libby was convicted not for leaking but for lying to the FBI agents. That lie came when Libby did not tell the agents that he had learned about Valerie Wilson's CIA position from Cheney. Instead, Libby had told the investigators that the late Tim Russert was the person who first informed him about Valerie Wilson's CIA connection; Russert testified at the trial that he could not have told Libby any such thing because he hadn''t known about Valerie Wilson's CIA position until after it became public knowledge. Even Bush acknowledged the validity of the jury's verdict when he wiped out Libby's jail time, arguing that this particular sentence (30 months) was excessive. The Cheney statement seemed to indicate the ex-veep doesn't understand the Libby case--or that he's willing to obfuscate facts to defend his former chief of staff.
Cheney is good for business--my businesss, at least. I was invited to go on Hardball to discuss the Time article and Cheney's response. And Chris Matthews does enjoy talking about Cheney. Here's what happened:

I don't understand why Cheney just does not go away.
I like at the end when Corn compares Cheney to Jaws and Mathews compares him to Freddy Kruger. I laughed so hard i spit coffee all over myself.

Funny, I think Cheney doesn't go away because he feels like he has a legacy to uphold. Then his defense of Libby eerily resembles the response of our President to his friend H.L. Gates Jr. I think the people who spin the news like to agitate him so we focus on something as pithy as this rather than righting our Country.
Hope the coffee wasn't too hot!

My thoughts are that Libby was guilty of greater crimes than what he was ever convicted of.
Was H.L. Gates Jr. ever found guilty of anything?
I guess I just do not understand the corelation between the two.

By now you should know to read Marcy Wheeler about all Plame related matters. You jumped the gun on praising this article, David.

This is a lose-lose for the Andover Cheerleader.
If he didn't know what Cheney and Libby were doing and lying about - he admits to being clueless.
If he knew - he is criminal.
Either way - epic fail.

Liddy Lied: There is no Deposition from Obama's step-grandmother
Today on Hardball, the felon G. Gordon Liddy appeared to make the case that not only was Obama not born in America, he is an "illegal alien."
Asked for his evidence, Liddy said he had a 'sworn deposition' from Obama's stepgrandmother, Sarah Obama:
I have a deposition, sworn statement from the step-grandmother who says "I was present and saw him born in Mumbasa, Kenya."
There's just one problem--there is no such thing. Philip Berg, who filed the original lawsuit, did not include a "deposition" from Sarah Obama. He included a partial transcript of a phone call in which he claims she made the above statement. Note the word "partial." Berg's transcript omitted the majority of the conversation, in which Sarah Obama's translator assures the caller that he is mistaken.

McCain Campaign Investigated, Dismissed Obama Citizenship Rumors
Frivolous 'Birther' Lawsuits Fuel Conspiracy Theories, Media Coverage
In the final months of the 2008 presidential race, Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign learned of a lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania that asked the state to strip Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) of the Democratic nomination on suspicion that he was not an American citizen. The complaint for declaratory and injunctive relief was filed by Phil Berg, a former deputy state attorney general who left government in 1990 for a series of gadfly political campaigns. His last round of notoriety had come when he filed RICO complaints against George W. Bush, Saddam Hussein and multiple members of the Bush administration for “accountability” for the 9/11 attacks. Still, Berg’s complaint had gotten glancing local media attention, and the Democratic National Committee’s counsel had filed a motion to dismiss it. One lawyer who was doing some work for the campaign was tasked with reading Berg’s lawsuit and gauging its chances of success.
“The conversation was along the lines of ‘this is idiotic, but explain to me why,’” said the lawyer, who spoke under condition of anonymity to TWI. “I looked at whether the lawsuit was going to be dismissed. I said yes.”

Mr. Corn,
As with the so called "journalism" of many of your left-wing co-horts, this article continues to desperately cling to your "Hate Bush" past.
And, as usual, you avoid the realities of the Obama administration, not covering the irreparable damage Barry caused during his recent Moscow visit. See the respect he garnered, reflected in this video -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1C_NWMRs8Q
That clip shows "a conflict that threatened to ruin the relationship between" the US and Russia, but apparently in your world, since it is unfavorable to BHO, it is not newsworthy.
Thanks.

The Sarah Obama Myth
I’ve addressed the rumor that one of President Obama’s African relatives “was there” when Obama was born before, most recently in my story today, but Alex Koppelman has a good take-out in Salon. G. Gordon Liddy has repeatedly said Obama was “born in the Kenyan slums” because of a doctored audio tape.
What Liddy was referring to is actually an affidavit filed by a street preacher named Ron McRae, who conducted an interview with Sarah Obama, the second wife of President Obama’s grandfather, through a translator. (Sarah Obama is not the president’s biological grandmother, but he calls her “Granny Sarah.”)
In that interview, Sarah Obama does in fact say at one point that she was there for her grandson’s birth. But that was a mistake, a confusion in translation. As soon as a jubilant McRae began to press her for further details about her grandson being born in Kenya, the family realized the mistake and corrected him. And corrected him. And corrected him.
This has been one of the most pervasive Obama myths, and because none of the citizenship lawsuits get trial, the ‘birthers’ believe it’s never been disproven. It’s quite telling.

Pelosi: GOP Frightened Of Health Care Reform's Political Power
More is at stake than the health of the American people in the congressional effort to overhaul the health care system. The loyalty of the American public is up for grabs, too.
House Speaker Nancy (D-Calif.) told a small group of reporters Wednesday that the GOP, whatever its policy concerns, was intent on blocking health care reform out of fear that it will give a generational boost to the Democratic Party.
Pelosi, in painting the debate in starkly political terms, was careful to say clearly that it was the Republican Party that did so first. But underlying her remarks is a belief held by many in both parties that if Democrats can pass health care legislation that expands coverage and brings down cost they can lock up the majority for years to come, much as the party did after implementing the New Deal reforms.
"When the democrats -- and hopefully bipartisanly -- pass this health care reform, this is bigger than anything most of us have ever done in our political lives," Pelosi said.

Limbaugh: Obama has a ‘chip on his shoulder’ because he’s ‘black.’
In an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren last night, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh said President Obama was more “passionate” during Wednesday night’s news conference about the arrest of his friend, Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, than he was about health care. Limbaugh said the reason was clear: Obama is “black” and that as a result he’s “got a chip on his shoulder“:
LIMBAUGH: I think Obama is largely misunderstood by a lot of people. … We’re finding out that this guy’s got a chip on his shoulder. He’s angry at this country. He’s not proud of it. […]
Let’s face it, President Obama’s black, and I think he’s got a chip on his shoulder. I think there are elements in this country he doesn’t like and he never has liked. And he’s using the power of the presidency to remake the country.

Republicans obstruct House proceedings to attend Boehner’s annual beach party.
Yesterday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) took the unusual step of requesting the House clerk to read aloud a 55-page motion to recommit, a process that took over 40 minutes. The obstructionist tactic, the Politico’s Glenn Thrush reports, appears to have been orchestrated by the GOP in order to delay House proceedings so Republicans could attend the annual “Boehner Beach Party” fundraising event at the Cantina Marina, a D.C. restaurant near the waterfront. Party Time, a blog maintained by the Sunlight Foundation, obtained a copy of the invite for Rep. John Boehner’s (R-OH) event. View it below:
Boehner’s spokesman has claimed that the stalling was part of a “protest” against Democrats. However, after Democratic aides pointed out that members seemed to be leaving for Boehner’s party, Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA) sheepishly returned to the floor to apologize to his colleagues for the “delay here.” CQ reported that while the House clerk labored to finish a task that is typically dispensed with in seconds by unanimous consent, a Boehner spokesman sent an e-mail saying that he was “headed down now” to the party.

Rahm Negotiates With Blue Dogs, Says Bill Could Come Next Week
[...]
Emanuel also said he was pleased by Republicans' vows to obstruct the bill.
Emanuel shrugged off Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-S.C.) comments Wednesday that health care is Obama's "Waterloo" and remarks Thursday by Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) that Republicans are plotting the bill's demise on a "week by week" basis.
"At least they're honest about their motivation. Their view about health care is about defeating President Obama," he said. "Politically, I actually appreciate what they said."
"I'm OK with politics, as you well know," Emanuel elaborated. "They're seeing it in political terms, and they've decided that if they can beat the president on health care reform, they've scored a big political victory. But what they've also guaranteed in policy terms is that you have the status quo. I actually appreciate what Senator DeMint said and Senator Inhofe. I'm different than everybody, I'm not going to criticize them. I compliment them. They're honest."
