Last state twitter. Thank you Alaska! I love you. God bless Alaska....So it's, I love you, but it's best that I leave you. That's just like a bad break-up. ("It's not you, Alaska, the problem is me....") And there was this one:
As if Palin had gone Kerouac or Merry Prankster: drop out, work is for suckers.
W/ kids in camper...AK is BIG/WILD/GOOD LIFE;feel freedom here
In any event, it seems doubtful Plain will really be gone--as in silent. As she writes--or oversees the ghostwriting of--her book, she'll certainly make various pronouncements that can fuel cable chat about her and her possible presidential ambitions. She might campaign for GOP candidates, if she can find one or two who will accept her assistance.
I wonder if she will continue to be an anti-media crusader. Bashing the elite press used to have a lot of salience with the world of conservatives and Republicans. Jesse Helms went after CBS News (and Dan Rather) for years. These days, though, the elite media just ain't what they used to be. Can anyone argue with a straight face that the United States will lose the war in Afghanistan because of how CBS reports on the war? (Much of the conservative case against the media in the 1970s and 1980s flowed from the notion that the lilly-liver liberals in the media undermined the US military effort in Vietnam.) But suggesting today that CBS News's reports on Afghanistan will affect the outcome would probably get you laughs in most quarters. (Sorry, Walter Cronkite. RIP.)
The big media has lost power and influence, and it's not the foil it once was. Palin's anti-media rants will win over those conservatives who believe that Fox News is the only accurate depiction of reality. There are millions who fall into this category, but it's not an expanding slice of the population. And it's not likely sizeable enough to support a national political effort.
Meanwhile, there surely are Paliniacs who will stand by her. Look at this message put out by TeamSarah.org:
True to her "call to public service." Didn't she just bail on public service? The statement continues:
"Sarah Palin has always been an intensely independent woman-- always true to her faith, her family and call to public service. She has provided women with a new political role model, offering a positive example of grace and poise as she deflected the barrage of baseless personal attacks on her family," said Team Sarah Co-Founder Marjorie Dannenfelser. "Her entrance onto the public stage has attracted massive numbers of Americans new to the political process. We have every confidence she will have an equal and profound impact in whatever projects she undertakes as a private citizen."
Yes, when the economy is on its knees, the climate is changing, two wars are waging, and the health care system is sick, the most important job for Palin is to destroy "the liberal feminist political establishment." If Palin plays to this political crowd, she'll make a ton of money--books, speeches, the like--but her political career will be deader than it is at the moment.
"Team Sarah members anxiously await Palin's next decision on how she believes she can best serve our nation. Governor Sarah Palin is the real deal. She is smart; she is articulate; she is strong; she is compassionate and she walks the talk. I believe the ongoing personal attacks on both Governor Palin and her family indicate that she remains a real threat to the liberal feminist political establishment," said Team Sarah Co-Founder Jane Abraham. "Despite the criticism, Governor Palin's success will endure. Team Sarah's thousands of members remain as engaged as ever on TeamSarah.org. The Governor has inspired millions, and her audience of enthusiastic support will only grow in the future."

THE COWBOYS OF KABUL. Reporter Dan Schulman, my colleague at Mother Jones, has a kick-ass story out about two Texan grandparents who went from bankruptcy to raking in millions as contractors in Afghanistan. There was one little problem, though. According to the US government, they did so by fraud, using phony receipts and ghost employees. This is a twisted tale (and a solid piece of journalism) detailing a vivid example of what can happen in the Wild West bonanza of private contracting in Afghanistan. Read it here

Who wrote this, a 5 year old? Does your computer have grammar or spell check? If her political career is "so dead" why does the media, including you continue to go after her? I'll tell you why. It's because they are afraid of her. As a VP candidate she drew huge crowds because she has substance, not because of her rock star persona. Nice try Corn. The only thing accomplished in this article was a waste of my time that I'll never get back.

David Letterman had a funny top ten of the things overheard at her going away party. If she would REALLY go away, I'm sure David Letterman would miss her as well as most Democrats. She's the joke that keeps on giving and Dems hope like hell she's the opponent in 2112. NOBODY can put out the inane stuff like she does, such as "I'm quitting because I'm not a quitter". hahaha

Benny: "If her political career is "so dead" why does the media, including you continue to go after her? I'll tell you why. It's because they are afraid of her."
"Afraid of her" is the lamest reason a supporter can offer for Palin - I'd be a bit afraid if the ditz had a chance of winning a national election (both because of the resulting chaos/further division of American citizens, and wondering if someone poisoned the air/water to make a large enough group elect someone who is clearly out of touch with reality). The media is keeps Palin on front pages for the same reasons as tabloids during Britney Spears's meltdown - it gets readers. There's also the "I can't take my eyes off it" tendency for people to watch a disastrous train wreck, plane going down in flames, or tightrope walker fall - no one is afraid of Sarah Palin. If I were Republican I'd be afraid if she's the best the GOP can offer (are they serious about this after the McCain debacle???). The only group she appeals to are Far Right Rovians and they're no longer large enough to win an election - and any deviation from NeoCon ideals will make them stay home election day. I predict Palin will get few takers for campaign assistance, will be offended by this, and end up starting her own splinter group. Since she'll never win (and with hardcore Base votes gone from the relevant tally), this will free normal Republicans to move a bit right center so they have a chance to win back voters who've left the party.

I think there should be an amendment to the old adage "There are only two things that are certain: death and taxes" to read "The only certainties in life are death, taxes and Sarah Palin will make a convoluted word salad in lieu of a lucid speech."
I admit, I can't get more than three or four minutes in to one of her speeches before my eyes glaze over because she uses so many words and takes so much time to say absolutely nothing at all. Poor CSpanJunkie did the hard work and recorded her "Goodbye, Cruel World" speech:

While the lefties are worring about Palin, Barry is crashing big time:
Rasmussen: more say Spendulus hurt economy than helped
—Purple Avenger
Maybe this is the hill a lot of congressional careers are going to die on?
...only 25% of U.S. voters now say the stimulus plan has helped the economy. That’s a six-point drop from a month ago.
Thirty-one percent (31%) say the stimulus actually hurt the economy, little changed from a month ago. However, this is the first poll showing that more voters believe the plan hurt rather than helped.
A plurality (36%) says the plan has had no impact...
...
31+36 = 67% of the public believes the Crapulus either did nothing or was damaging.
SIXTY. SEVEN. PERCENT.
Mandate indeed. In other news, congressional varmint season just opened, and there's no bag limit on tossing out cretins this next election.

US Vice President Biden hits nerve in Russia
By LYNN BERRY
The Associated Press
Monday, July 27, 2009 12:16 PM
MOSCOW -- An interview U.S. Vice President Joe Biden gave to an American newspaper was front-page news Monday in Moscow, where his characterization of Russia as a weakened nation hit a raw nerve.
Biden said Russia's economic difficulties are likely to make the Kremlin more willing to cooperate with the United States on a range of national security issues.
"I think we vastly underestimate the hand that we hold," he said in an interview to The Wall Street Journal published Saturday.
Biden's comments appeared to catch the Kremlin by surprise, coming less than three weeks after President Barack Obama said on a visit to Moscow that the U.S. wants to see a "strong, peaceful and prosperous Russia."
"It raises the question: Who is shaping U.S. foreign policy? The president or members of his team, even the most respected ones?" said Kremlin foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Monday downplayed suggestions that Biden was setting a different U.S. policy from that laid out by the president.
When asked whether Obama thought Biden had gone too far in his remarks, Gibbs said the president stated his views on Russia during his recent visit and the vice president agrees with those views.
Gibbs said both leaders believe Russia will do its part to improve relations with the U.S.
Most Russian newspapers put Biden's interview on their front pages Monday, with headlines casting doubt on Washington's commitment to forge a more constructive relationship with Moscow.
"Joe Biden unexpectedly returned to the rhetoric of the previous Bush administration," the newspaper Kommersant wrote.
Moskovsky Komsomolets said Biden, with his "boorish openness," showed what the Obama administration really thinks about Russia. "We should respond to the Yankees in the same way," the newspaper wrote. "Any other language, unfortunately or fortunately, they do not understand."

Gee, I thought Barry added Biden because of his foreign policy experience.

AP IMPACT: Dodd, Conrad told deals were sweetened

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite their denials, influential Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd were told from the start they were getting VIP mortgage discounts from one of the nation's largest lenders, the official who handled their loans has told Congress in secret testimony.
Both senators have said that at the time the mortgages were being written they didn't know they were getting unique deals from Countrywide Financial Corp., the company that went on to lose billions of dollars on home loans to credit-strapped borrowers. Dodd still maintains he got no preferential treatment.
Dodd got two Countrywide mortgages in 2003, refinancing his home in Connecticut and another residence in Washington. Conrad's two Countrywide mortgages in 2004 were for a beach house in Delaware and an eight-unit apartment building in Bismarck in his home state of North Dakota.
Robert Feinberg, who worked in the Countrywide's VIP section, told congressional investigators last month that the two senators were made aware that "who you know is basically how you're coming in here."
"You don't say 'no' to the VIP," Feinberg told Republican investigators for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press.
The next day, Feinberg testified before the Senate Ethics Committee, an indication the panel is actively investigating two of the chamber's more powerful members:

Obama Denies NYC, Houston Stimulus Police Funds
Monday, July 27, 2009 7:25 PM
WASHINGTON -- Federal officials say a $1 billion economic stimulus program to help cities avoid laying off police officers has decided not to give money to four major U.S. cities, New York, Seattle, Houston and Pittsburgh.
The officials tell The Associated Press the four cities were among some 7,000 state and local agencies that will not get aid under the so-called COPS program in the economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. More than 1,000 agencies will receive aid.
The officials spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the details publicly.
Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder are to appear in Philadelphia on Tuesday to announce who gets what.

The reality is that Rick Perry lives a life completely removed from the realities everyday Texans face in dealing with health insurance and health care.
As the Houston Chronicle reported yesterday: "On the dollars of taxpayers and wealthy donors, Gov. Rick - reared amid the cotton fields of West Texas - gets to live the life of the rich and famous, traveling the world meeting captains of industry, sports stars and royalty. The taxpayers shell out $108,000 a year to rent him an estate west of Austin, and spend another $168,000 on chefs, stewards and housekeepers for the Perrys' creature comforts" [Houston Chronicle, 7/26/2009].
Who needs health insurance reform when you have perks like these?

Racism Is the Prime Cause for Debunked Obama Birth Certificate Conspiracy Theory
The "birther" conspiracy has been utterly debunked, yet more GOP establishment figures have embraced the transparently racist cause.
[...]
"The birther stuff to me is part of the same narcissistic breakdown that is at the heart of every e-mail I get from a college kid or that college kid's parents who say, 'I couldn't get enough financial aid because they're giving all the scholarships to black people,'" says Wise. "This narcissism is especially evident when you watch such hateful right-wing media buffoons as Rush Limbaugh -- who supports the birthers -- and "who are just becoming totally unglued."
"On the one hand it's funny," says Wise. "On the other hand it's really frightening, because people when they're in that sort of meltdown mode don't make good decisions and do really crazy things." Take James W. Von Brunn, the white supremacist -- and "birther" himself -- who shot and killed a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in June.
It would be pushing it to see the birthers phenomenon is a a sign that white hegemony is nearing its last throes. However, "one really positive thing about Obama's presidency in regards to race" says Wise, is that "its created this nuttiness on the part of a lot white folks who have always been thinking this stuff but they just haven't been as bold with it."
"At some point it will become increasingly difficult for those who like to deny racism as a problem to continue completely burying their heads."
"At some point, people will have to say, maybe black folks aren't the crazy ones. Maybe it's not the folks of color who have lost their minds. Maybe it's you."

U.S. home prices see first rise in three years
[...]
"To put it in perspective, this is the first time we have seen broad increases in home prices in 34 months," David M. Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P, said in a statement. "This could be an indication that home price declines are finally stabilizing".
The 10 and 20-city indexes reported positive returns for the first time since summer of 2006.
"With the numbers we've seen on home sales starting to firm and now home prices stabilizing, we're getting more evidence that the housing market may have hit bottom," said Gary Thayer, senior economist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis, Missouri.
Sales of new homes jumped 11 percent in June, the biggest monthly gain in eight years, the Commerce Department said on Monday, in another sign that worst housing market since the Great Depression may be gaining some footing.

All-time favorite Palin quotes:
1. "As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border."
--SP explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008
2. "I told the Congress, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' on that Bridge to Nowhere."
–SP, who was FOR the Bridge to Nowhere before she was AGAINST it
3. "I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't.'"
--SP, as quoted by former City Council Member Nick Carney, after he raised objections about the $50,000 she spent renovating the mayor's office without approval of the city council

From Conservative writer Andrew Sullivan . . . he call's 'em the Odd Lies of Sarah Palin:
http://tinyurl.com/mvahf2
Palin lied when she said the dismissal of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, had nothing to do with his refusal to fire state trooper Mike Wooten; in fact, the Branchflower Report concluded that she repeatedly abused her power when dealing with both men.
Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed to have said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere; in fact, she openly campaigned for the federal project when running for governor.
Palin lied when she denied that Wasilla's police chief and librarian had been fired; in fact, both were given letters of termination the previous day.
Palin lied when she wrote in the NYT that a comprehensive review by Alaska wildlife officials showed that polar bears were not endangered; in fact, email correspondence between those scientists showed the opposite.
Palin lied when she claimed in her convention speech that an oil gas pipeline "began" under her guidance; in fact, the pipeline was years from breaking ground, if at all.
Palin lied when she told Charlie Gibson that she does not pass judgment on gay people; in fact, she opposes all rights between gay spouses and belongs to a church that promotes conversion therapy.
Palin lied when she denied having said that humans do not contribute to climate change; in fact, she had previously proclaimed that human activity was not to blame.

There are more and the list keeps growing and growing. The Bellyaching Barracuda is loads of fun.

The Late Niters have fun with Palin:
"Big news up in Alaska. Sarah Palin will formally step down as governor on Sunday, leaving us completely unprotected from the Russians."
--Jimmy Kimmel
"Palin announced her retirement a couple of weeks ago without exactly saying why. Ordinarily, when you quit a job like this, you give a reason, like, 'I was just caught in a restroom soliciting gay sex,' or, 'I was just caught banging a thousand-dollar hooker,' or, 'I was just caught sneaking to Argentina to have sex with my girlfriend' -- oh, wait, that guy didn't actually resign. But you get the idea."
--Jimmy Kimmel
"Sarah Palin will be stepping down in two days. Unless, of course, she decides to leave early."
--David Letterman
"Governor Palin says she's leaving office because she wants to spend more time hunting down her escaped son-in-law."
--David Letterman

7. Todd, I've always wanted to know -- what do you do exactly?

3. Please accept this gift from all of us at Lenscrafters.

"And you know, there's some kind of ethics investigation going on up in Alaska, also involving Governor Palin. I don't know what the ethics violations are, but for our purposes here, let's just say that she robbed a gas station."
--David Letterman
"Don't kid yourself. Sunday is going to be an emotional day. It's her last day. She's going to go out on to the porch and wave goodbye to Russia. So it's a big weekend."
--David Letterman
"You remember before the election, in October and September, and the big convention, all people could talk about was Sarah Palin and John McCain? And now, this is Sarah Palin's last week in office as governor of Alaska. Isn't that crazy? Going back to her old job as IHOP hostess."
--David Letterman
"But Sunday will be a big day for Sarah Palin. That's the day she plans to go on her porch and wave goodbye to Russia. Then she'll run back in the House and jiggle the handle."
--David Letterman
"The governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is stepping down from office. Will no longer be the governor of Alaska on Sunday. So right about now, Sarah Palin should be taking her grizzly bear head off the wall and packing it in bubble wrap."
--David Letterman
"It looks like healthcare reform really is gaining momentum and is going to happen. Now of course Republicans say the plan is too confusing, too convoluted, but you know, these are the same people who say they can make sense out of a Sarah Palin speech."
--Bill Maher
"According to a new poll, 42% of Americans say they would vote for Sarah Palin for president in 2012. They also said they'd support her decision to step down in 2013."
