I purposefully did not pay much attention to the so-called tea parties of protest held yesterday by right-wingers upset by President Barack Obama. This was an event ginned up by a few conservative commentators and given undue coverage by an overly excited Fox News. Why bother with it?
But on Wednesday, as I left the daily press briefing at the White House, I had to pass by two hundred or so soggy teabaggers. And what I saw convinced me that many of them were--oh, how to put this politely--too dumb to know to come in from out of the rain. How could I tell? The signs they carried. The messages painted on the placards included, "Taxes are theft"; "It's my money"; "Give me my money back"; "Say No To Taxes"; and the like. There also were numerous signs blasting Obama as a socialist. (By the way, unless you want to dismantle Medicare, you, too, are a socialist.)
These people were not protesting particular policies of Obama; they were decrying the foundation of the American political system: citizens pay taxes that cover the costs of government services. How many of the conservative talking heads and political leaders who hailed the tax day protests would agree that there should be no taxes? In this nation, adults debate tax rates and the proper use of tax funds and even the form of taxation implemented by the government--not whether or not there should be taxes.
The folks in the rain outside the White House were marginal government-haters. Some had been bussed in from who-knows-where--maybe from ultra-libertarian survivalist compounds in rural West Virginia. As I gazed at them, I couldn't help thinking:
Next time, you're in a car crash and you're taken to the emergency room at a hospital, imagine the doctors there saying, "Before we operate and save your life, you first have to pay us $43,000, because that's what we estimate it's going to cost. And in our full-free-market economy, we only deliver services to people who can pay the full costs--up-front.....What, you don't have the money? And no insurance card? Sorry."
There are people who do not want to live within a community of citizens, where taxes are collected and used (we hope) to serve and protect that community. (Try testing all your food for carcinogenic substances on your own at home!) To them, we can only say: tough luck. The battle has been lost. This is a country where we collectively decide how to manage our resources. We hold elections to determine how much to tax and how to use the tax money collected. A protest against the very notion of taxes is akin to a childish rant. These people ought to be brandishing juice boxes, not tea bags.

You are totally off the mark as to what the rallies were about. They were NOT about not being taxed. They were about being taxed to death only to have BOTH parties use that money in ways that are totally insane. The rally I went to had no one standing up to say, "No more taxes." It had people saying, "Let's change the way we're taxed to make if fair" and "we're sick and tired of politicians using our money in inappropriate ways without asking our opinons." That's called taxation without representation. I'm not a Republican. Nor am I a Democrat and I blame both parties for the failures and the state of our economy. If you're too blind to see that then you're part of the problem. I pay almost 35% of my income to the government. And what do they do with it? Waste it - particularly on more and more government progams that do no one any good and only run up the deficit. I'mm sick of bureaucrats sitting around with their thumbs up their butts and lifetime politicians with nothing on their minds but how they can benefit from being in office. There's no one in Washington representing my interests. And that includes a communist president. Do your research.

Mindless lemmings were so lost under Bush they never had a tea party when a trillion dollars went for an unnecessary and illegal war?

I do not know who the GOP are trying to fool because these so-called “tea parties” are really an attempt at Disguised Racism…, if a white man had been elected President, they would not be doing this. They know that there is still some right-wing extremists who hate blacks, jews, etc., and they want to get this element going again. That is why the Govenor of Texas is so ready to secede from the Union! I say shame on the GOP, Rush, Fox, Hannity and Scarborough. What they are doing is evil.

"overly excited Fox News"
Yeah, I happened to be watching the news on channel Fox 4 (DFW area, Texas) and noticed right away how the cameras were focusing on the signs and banners mentioning socialism. Mr. Perfect Hair is a disgrace to this state but don't expect the voters around here to wise up any time soon. I still see SUVs with Bush/Cheney bumper stickers displayed proudly. Well, some of those were replaced by imitation Obama stickers printed in Arabic.

Dear Belle(icose) -
You have representation in government. You just don't like how they vote.
Then vote them out. Or tell them your message louder. But, don't lie and say that you are without representation.
If you want to live in a democracy, then your responsibility is to do your part to make the government work well. That's the deal.

This country was founded as a republic, not a democracy. It was founded to assure that the people tell the government what to do not the other way around. If there had been rallies when Bush was signing those assholish bailouts when he was president I'd have been there. If there had been the same demonstrations when he went into Iraq that we had in the 60's and 70's I'd have been there. I tried to get people to go out and show what they stand for - everyone was too complacent. Bush was an idiot. If we were being represented the government wouldn't be spending money it doesn't have. I don't personally care if the president, be he or she a republican or a democrat, is a black lesbian woman (redundant, I know). Nor do I know anyone else personally who has an issue with Obama's race (he's whiter than I am by the way) although I'm sure there are people who do. It isn't about Obama particularly - it's about both parties screwing us over. If you don't see that you're naive. The democrats had to support the Bush bail outs, by the way, and they did. They were in control and all they had to do was veto. We don't see that happening these days do we? We see a lot of rubberstamping. The democrats love that kind of thing. It gives them control. So do the republicans. Gives them control, too. Where is the bail out money coming from? Where is the stimulus money coming from? Thin air. Watch David Walker - just go to YouTube and search his videos. He was the comptroller for years - head of the whole government financial system. Who will pay this debt one day? Our kids and grandkids. Matters not to me who the president is - that's not why I went to the rally. It's just time to fix what's broken. I write letters to my congressmen. Do you? I talk to people. I vote. I do what I can. So far my representatives haven't come through. I vote against the same old same old every time I vote. Most people just keep voting the same stupidity back into ofice. I do my part. So insult me all you want. If I weren't doing what I can do I wouldn't be reading this site.

Well, you are represented, because you have the right to vote for your representatives in government. But, you just haven't persuaded your representatives to agree with you. That's still representation.
BTW, there were massive anti-war protests before and since the invasion of Iraq. I was there. Where were you?
The main problem is excessive corporate influence over government policies -- at the expense of the average taxpayer. That didn't seem to be the theme, though, at the little (yes, little) tea parties. Rather, it was a petulent, generalized anti-tax message. Not helpful.

The corporate interests have to be able to sell a product to the uninformed.
Who isn't paying taxes? Mega $$ corporations - who isn't paying enough taxes the wealthy.
Any so-called regular folks who support this kind of BS are "too dumb to know to come in from out of the rain."
The only person who could be insulted would be so through self-identification. (that's funny ,no?)
Too dumb to exclude ones self from the mindless pack of shills is too dumb to be of any concern.
Anti-tax - Anti-government is just a front - The racist overtones and anti-Obamaism shows through.
As useless and powerless as the PUMA's (hey I bet they were at the tea-bagging party!)
*brushes shoulder*
I think they need an "education camp" as "re-education camp" would be too optimimistic. Where are those FEMA helicopters when you need them?

Well, at least you Dems are consistent!
The last time I heard such ardent name calling, minimizing of crowd size, trivializing of message, racist sentiments, etc. was when that guy led those "small" crowd gatherings a while back. What was his name ... oh, yeah, Martin Luther King Jr.
And who was one of the loudest voices? Some guy named Gore (I think his son went on to discover some major communications network or something).

Bush Torture Memos Released By Obama: See The Complete Documents
As part of an ongoing court case, the Department of Justice released on Thursday memos issued by the Office of Legal Counsel between 2002 and 2005, detailing techniques used for interrogation of terrorism suspects. In doing so, President Obama declared:
"While I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, I also believe that in a dangerous world, the United States must sometimes carry out intelligence operations and protect information that is classified for purposes of national security. I have already fought for that principle in court and will do so again in the future. However, after consulting with the Attorney General, the Director of National Intelligence, and others, I believe that exceptional circumstances surround these memos and require their release."

High School Low
[snip]
Once denuded of the power usually begot by bullying, gerrymandering and intimidation, the Republicans have nothing but pimply, puerile gestures. After the decisive failure of neocon policies enacted by Bush under the aegis of Republican Conservatism, policies developed and executed with admirable discipline and focus by the way, it is clear that's all they ever had. Like waging a perpetual war, like running a perpetual campaign, the endgame for them was having no endgame.
And what a waste of good, Republican talent and energy, I say.
Why not turn their redoubtable organizational skills at rallying the rake wielding, torch bearing faithful to rebuilding our rotting infrastructure? Or constructing a transcontinental high speed rail system? Or keeping arts programs in schools? Hell, how about starting a campaign to finally build the World Trade Center memorial in downtown New York City. It's only been eight years! Now that you're out of power doesn't mean you can't be useful.
And maybe even a force for good.
Now, come inside and finish your homework.

I made a quick visit to one of the tea parties in my area. Based on the racial makeup of the tea party I witnessed, and the photos I have seen from them nationwide, the conservative movement has some serious problems. There is just no way to win elections without including some minorities somewhere.
Heck, the state I live in is a "minority majority" state, meaning that no racial group makes up a majority. If they can't draw various ethnic groups, they're not going to win many elections.
I would think the conservative movement would be worried about this, but I think they are convinced they are the "real America". I guess they may need a few more years of lost elections before they realize they need to be inclusive.

David,
Here's something to add to your analogy ofthe car accident. Our taxes pay for police and fire department services. The next time your house if robbed, you are mugged, your house catches on fire, think about how your taxes are being put to use. You may never need the police or the fire department, does that mean you shouldn't pay taxes to support these services? Of course not. Should your taxes be paid based on your use? Of course not.
And yes, this is a socialist type of government services, including our schools. So what? What difference does it make what you call it? Labels are stupid.

AS one who attended and protested, we are not protesting taxes, but rather unbridled spending and the use of the banking crisis to usher in a social agenda. We have not begun to see the taxation impact of the unbearable debt being created "out of thin air".
This debt will be the hook in our jaw that will control our foreign and domestic policy for years to come. The liberty that our republic permits will become forfeit through both the debts and the boondoggle 'green' policies.
It is not just the prospect of rising income tax, but novel taxes imposed through Cap and Trade and the most non-progressive tax of inflation and devaluation of the $US, which will punish the poor and middle class savers most of all!
