Is Jane Harman Telling the Truth? And Why It's Important To Know

| | Comments (15)

It sure looked (or sounded), at least for a moment, that NPR host Robert Siegel had caught embattled Rep. Jane Harman in a contradiction.

The California Democrat went on "All things Considered" on Tuesday as part of a PR offensive, in which she was reacting to CQ's story reporting she had been captured on an NSA intercept telling a suspected Israeli agent she would try to reduce the espionage-related charges for two AIPAC officials, possibly in return for help in her bid to become chair of the House intelligence committee.

Harman has called for the release of the NSA intercepts and has decried such wiretapping as a "gross" abuse--despite the fact she has been a major congressional defender of the Bush administration's warantless wiretap program. But she has not publicly said who was the other party in this particular conversation. In fact, she has said she cannot recall such a call. She told Siegel:

We don't know if there was a phone call. These are three unnamed sources, former and present national security officials, who are allegedly selectively leaking information about a phone call or phone calls that may or may not have taken place. I have to say I am outraged that I may have been wiretapped by my government in 2005 or 2006 while I was ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee.

She also said: " No. I can't recall with any specificity a conversation I may have had four years ago."

Yet later in the interview, she said, "The person I was talking to was an American citizen." Wait a minute. She cannot recall the conversation, but she knows the person was an American? Siegel is sharp, and he pounced on this:

MR. SIEGEL: But you are saying that you know it was an American citizen. So that would suggest that you know that there was a -
REP. HARMAN: Well, I know that anyone I would have talked to about, you know, the AIPAC prosecution would have been an American citizen. I didn't talk to some foreigner about it.

I leave it to you: is that a reasonable explanation? A suspicious person could say that she made a darn good recovery. Harman, as I noted on Tuesday, is engaged in a bold gambit. She is calling for the full release of tapes that could make her look real bad, knowing that it's unlikely the tapes will be disclosed in their entirety.

Harman never became chair of the House intelligence committee, but she remains chair of the intelligence subcommittee of the House homeland security committee. That's a significant post. Consequently, it's important to know if she is telling the truth and if she ever did trade favors with a suspected foreign agent. So far, though, there are no signs of any official investigation. Someone other than Robert Siegel should be on the case.

  1. What is even scarier is the influence it shows AIPAC has in congress.

As careful as this lobby tends to be I doubt they put all of their eggs in one basket. Who else did they approach that didn't get caught accidentally.

  2. "REP. HARMAN: Well, I know that anyone I would have talked to about, you know, the AIPAC prosecution would have been an American citizen. I didn't talk to some foreigner about it."

I read it as she knows the people to whom she speaks have dual citizenship - not a reach there also not what it sounds like - just "an American citizen"

    But I'm just guessing.

  4. I listened to that interview on the drive home yesterday. I don't think I have ever heard anyone sound guiltier. Let her pay along with any other traitors investigations may uncover.

    GOP still using disputed data

In speeches, interviews, and press releases, Republicans have repeatedly claimed that a cap and trade system would raise energy prices an average of $3,100 per household – a figure they got by doing some additional calculations off an MIT analysis.

MIT’s John Reilly, one of the authors of the study, slammed their use of his estimates earlier this month.

"It's just wrong," he told Politifact in an interview. "It's wrong in so many ways it's hard to begin."

  6. "House Republicans apparently took the total revenues from the hypothetical cap and trade system that MIT analyzed and crudely divided it by the number of households in America, getting approximately $3,100 per family."

  7. I wonder if the house Republicans would like to add up the revenue from all the oil, gas and electric companies - then divide that by the number of households and let us know what we are all paying to keep the fossil fuel fraternity flying high in private jets and living high on the hog in million dollar homes?

I bet they want none of that.

  8. Most of the AIPAC executives have dual Israeli-American citizenships. This complicates the screening by NSA; is this person American or a foreigner? I generally support Israel and understand the need for aggressive public relations efforts and political lobbying given Israel's always shaky existence. But as a 30 year U.S. Army intelligence officer, I can tell you that Israel shamelessly spies on the U.S. and AIPAC is essentially a front for the Mossad. If the intercept is verified as accurate, then Ms. Harman ought resign or have ethics charges filed immediately against her. BTW the whole idea of the U.S. allowing "dual citizenships" is absurd. You end up with guys like Rahm Emanuel fighting in the Israeli Army but would never be caught dead in the U.S. military. During the Vietnam war, many young Jewish-Americans chose to serve in Israel avoiding wartime service in the U.S. military--and got away with it. Naturalized American citizens take an oath to cut all ties with their former countries. I cannot believe that any person can have dual loyalties country to country. We should do away with dual citizenships and with "anchor babies" as well.

  9. " Rahm Emanuel fighting in the Israeli Army"

Factually incorrect. He was not fighting in the Israeli army.

"Emanuel did not serve in the Israeli army, but was a civilian volunteer assisting the Israel Defense Forces for a short time during the 1991 Gulf War, repairing truck brakes in one of Israel's northern bases with Sar-El."

"U.S. allowing "dual citizenships" is absurd" I agree but if you can't post facts don't expect to be taken seriously.

And "Anchor Babies" are all of us or our parents or grandparents. My better half was born in Oakland CA of Dutch parents - She is a natural born citizen and a real American and patriot.

    Ref for the army correction:

Sweet, Lynn (November 7, 2008). "Rahm Emanuel, enforcer". Chicago Sun-Times.

  10. capt: thanx for the corections. Still, my point is why was Emmanuel doing anything for the Israeli military? With the Gulf War in progress, why didn't he volunteer for the U.S. military? Where were his loyalties then?
And I still believe that a person cannot have loyalty to more than one country at a time. As to "anchor babies", I lived 25 miles north of the Mexican border from 1984 to 2000. The burden placed on the taxpayers of Cochise county, AZ were immense, primarily in medical treatments (several hospitals went bankrupt), educations, vastly increased K-12 registration, and law enforcement/prisons. The misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment (clearly referring to former slaves in America) allowing anyone born in the U.S. to automatically be a U.S. citizen, is one of the top reasons (second only to getting employment) for illegal migration to the U.S., setting the child and the family up for a lifetime of benefits courtesy of American taxpayers.

  11. Felix, please don't conflate the issue of dual citizenship with the problem of "anchor babies" because the two have nothing to do with each other. My parents came to the US from Mexico to start a family in a place with more potential. They were not yet citizens when my brother and I were born but were 100% legal residents like many others who get overshadowed by the illegal immigration debate. Because they were Mexican born I am automatically eligible for dual citizenship should I choose to apply, which I have seriously considered. Doing so would help connect me to my roots because most of my extended family is still in Mexico and citizenship makes travel much easier. It also opens up business and land investment opportunities. To insinuate wanting to explore these avenues means I am less loyal to this country because some others game the system is pretty offensive.

  12. eyes-Open:

No offense intended, Sir. Legal immigrants and their children are welcome. I also support legal recognition of the 12 million already here illegally. Maybe not citizenship initially, but certainly "green card" status. I am in favor of this legal recognition only if the border is sealed as tightly as possible. I understand the benefits you describe in a dual Mexican-American citizenship. However, I still maintain that a person can only have loyalty to one country at a time. In the immediate past Mexican General Election, there were many newspaper stories describing dual citizens casting votes in Mexico and plannig to vote in the upcoming U.S. elections as well. You can be connected to your roots by means other than Mexican citizenship; millions of European immigrants have done so successfully for over 200 years.

  13. Ok, I accept you didn't mean to offend, but I still think your reasoning is clouded by the missdeads of a few. Of course if you choose to live in the US your duties to this country should supercede any others. I don't see how your example of voting in both elections is relavent though, one in no way interferes with the other. It's these no good AIPAC types who are abusing the privaledge by putting Isreal's interests ABOVE those of this nation they call home. Please don't let the actions of a few bad apples convince you it is not possible for someone to fulfill some obligations to their ancestral home without conflicting with their present home.

  14. "Still, my point is why was Emmanuel doing anything for the Israeli military?"

    Read up on Rahm's bio.

You will understand why he volunteered to help protect his family in Israel as a civilian.

You're not being honest if you try to pass judgment without the facts. You need more facts to make any point you are trying to muster.

If you had read anything on Rahm - you wouldn't wonder so much.

Asking a question isn't the same as knowing something.

  15. As problematic as this is , even more is the fact that 2 extreme neocons partners of Harman are about to be confirmed by the Senate : David Cohen as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Fred Hochberg as president and chairman of the Export -Import Bank, the first one is a well known Hedge-Fund and security expert, if you know what i mean and with the second in control of Taxpayers money in bank accounts and access to direct transfer systems, they can move huge amounts of money for any reason, from money laundering for drugs , weapons , nukes and stolen goods to just passing money from one Hedge-Fund to another banker without getting caught, THEY ARE THE LAW themselves !!!! ....SO WILL ANYONE ASK IN D.C. WHO THESE 2 PEOPLE ARE ,their record AND WHO THEY WORKED FOR BEFORE ? OF COURSE NOT !!! this is D.C. for you : incompetent and corrupt to the core.

And about financing of terrorism : the sunni's are financed by wealthy sunni - wahabi Saudis, the same group that bombed the WTC ( at least 15 of the 19 were so ) and the shiite are financed by wealthy iraqis and iranis , they are the sponsors, and every time we fill up our gas tank or start the gas stove we send them money, lots of it ...that's where the terrorists come from : from our own dependency on imported Oil and Gas , this year Exxon Mobil has become the biggest user of gas from Qatar, they depend 60 -80 % on their gas, and guess what some of these sunni's and shiite's do with our money ......what a pack of ignorants we are, America !!!!

It's time to break free from Oil and Gas , it's time for Solar, Wind and Wave, Geothermal, Fuel-cells and advanced Batteries and Synthetic Fuels for Commercial and Military Aviation , lets go !!!

And the neocons around P.Obama and VP.Biden will never help America get there, they depend on America being exclusively addicted to Oil and Gas from the Middle East and with only one strategic partner, Israel, enough of this nonsense and lets establish the 2 State solution, , let's brake free from this slavery ! and they will stab these 2 above ( Obama and Biden ) in the back to put themselves in place for the 2010 or 2012 elections, just watch the scandals start....
