Arlen Specter's Situational Stance--and Sam Brownback's

| | Comments (56)

By now, you're probably sick of reading--or thinking--about Arlen Specter.

Our news cycles do overload when there's real news. And Specter's switch from R to D--that is, his switch-back, since earlier in his political career he had changed from D to R--was indeed news.

I'll spare you more punditing on the matter--since this event is already 23 hours old, which renders it practically ancient history. Suffice it to say that I take a cynical view of the move.

Had Specter not faced a serious threat in the GOP primary for his Senate seat, he'd most likely would not have changed ships. He did not stick to principle--fight for the soul of his party or leave his party months ago when it was clear where it was heading--he made a calculation. And that's no shocker.

Situational stands are, alas, not all that newsworthy in politics. As Washington was pondering Specter's move--will it make it easier for Dems to win cloture votes? will it move the Senate Democratic caucus slightly to the right? will it place pressure on the few remaining GOP moderates in the Senate (paging Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins) to follow suit?--the Senate was busy confirming Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as Health and Human Services secretary. There was not much drama to the final vote, but it did put on display the principles--or lack thereof--of at least one Republican senator: Sam Brownback.

Antiabortion groups had pressured Republican senators to vote against Sebelius, a strong supporter of abortion rights. They had made a big deal of the fact that Sebelius, on forms submitted to the Senate, had understated the amount of campaign contributions she had received from a well-known abortion provider in Kansas. Moreover, Sebelius enraged the antiabortion crowd last week when she vetoed a bill that would have imposed restrictions on late-term abortions. That caused Brownback to declare that he was considering voting against her.

Brownback is about as anti-abortion as they come in the Senate. He ran for president in the GOP primaries in 2008 as the antiabortion candidate. He attacked another 2008 contender for having accepted a donation from a contributor who supported abortion rights. His campaign maintained that Mitt Romney was not as anti-abortion as Brownback. He appeared at the annual anti-abortion march in Washington. Get it? Abortion was his key issue, even if it didn't get him too far.

So it would have been understandable for Brownback to have voted against Sebelius. But he didn't. Why? On NPR's Diane Rehm Show, Ramesh Ponnuru, an editor of the conservative National Review explained this was no biggie: Brownback is from Kansas, and he has his eye on the governorship. Given that Sebelius is popular in the Jayhawk State, Brownback didn't want to slap her in public--not even on a matter of bedrock principle. Had she'd been from any other state, Ponnuru assured the audience, Brownback would have voted against her.

What does this say about Brownback? He's as calculating as Specter. And it worked. A Kansas City Star columnist hailed Brownback's decision as "honorable" and "a welcome show of pragmatism."

Meanwhile, Democrats are squealing in delight at Specter's me-first abandonment of the GOP, and President Obama and the Democratic Party have promised to back him against any (real) Democrats in the state's Democratic Senate primary. Part of me is sorry that Specter, who for years pledged loyalty to the GOP, will have an easy time saving his own hide. (Chris Matthews, where are you?) But imagine this delicious scenario: some insurgent Pennsylvania Democrat does run against Specter and defeats him and goes on to win the Senate seat. Not likely, I know. But fans of justice (and foes of situational politics) can hope.

  2. I hope a real Dem challenges and wins that Senate seat. I've never trusted Specter. It dates back to his b/s magic bullet theory in the JFK asassination.

Fredo, of course the economy is gonna get worse. Obama can't fix bush's fk-ups in a hundred days. It's going to take ALOT longer to turn things around because the ignorant repugs messed things up so bad. It took Bill Clinton 4-years to go from budget deficits to budget surplusses (and we had 4 more years of surplusses during his second term) after daddy bush's fk-ups, and dubya fk'd things up ten times worse than reagan and daddy bush did.
You're a typical repug. A very basic thinker that can't digest more than a bumper sticker or drudge headline. The poll results you posted are just more proof of that. Just 42% of likely voters now believe the United States and its allies are winning the War on Terror, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

That’s down from 50% two weeks ago, down from 62% in early February, and is the lowest level of confidence since June 30, 2008.

  7. Generic Congressional Ballot
Republicans Top Democrats on Generic Congressional Ballot

    Tuesday, April 28, 2009

For just the second time in more than five years of daily or weekly tracking, Republicans now lead Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 41% would vote for their district’s Republican candidate while 38% would choose the Democrat. Thirty-one percent (31%) of conservative Democrats said they would vote for their district’s Republican candidate.

Overall, the GOP gained two points this week, while the Democrats lost a point in support. Still, it’s important to note that the GOP’s improved position comes primarily from falling Democratic support. Democrats are currently at their lowest level of support in the past year while Republicans are at the high water mark.

  8. Importance of Issues
More Voters See Taxes As Very Important Issue

    Monday, April 06, 2009

While the economy remains the top issue nationwide, taxes are moving up on the priority list. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 64% of voters see taxation as very important; it’s highest level in nearly two years.

Last month, 61% said taxes were very important to them. Prior to that survey, that number never rose above 60%.

Another 26% now see taxes as a somewhat important issue, while only 8% say taxes are not very or not at all important in terms of how they will vote.

Other data shows that 81% of voters nationwide say it is important to keep the promised middle class tax cuts in President Obama’s budget.

  9. Trust on Issues
Republicans Close The Gap With Democrats on Several Key Issues

    Monday, April 13, 2009

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows U.S. voters trust the Democratic Party over Republicans on the top issue of the economy by just a three-point margin this month, 45% to 42%.

It is still too early to determine whether voters are trending away from the economic initiatives of President Obama and congressional Democrats, but this is the closest the two parties have been on the issue of the economy since the first week of last September. In March, voters trusted the Democrats more by a 47% to 40% margin.

For the third straight month, investors trust the GOP more to handle the economy, 48% to 42%, but non-investors still trust Democrats more by 16 points.

Republicans now have moved further ahead of Democrats on the issues of national security and taxes. The GOP also has come on strong on several other issues, including immigration and Social Security.

Asked about fiscal discipline and entitlements reform, Obama seemed to be repressing a smile as he jabbed critics of his spending plans.

"Those of you who are watching certain news channels on which I'm not very popular, and you see folks waving tea bags around, Obama said, “let me just remind them that I am happy to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we are going to stabilize Social Security.”

“But,” Obama continued, “let's not play games and pretend that the reason [for the deficit] is because of the Recovery Act."

  24. Barack Obama's 100 days: 'I am not satisfied,' president says

US House passes Obama's $3.4tn budget as the president reports on America's progress

    [...]

Obama told the town hall meeting at Arnold, outside St Louis: "After 100 days, I am pleased with the progress we have made but I am not satisfied."

He laid out the problems facing the US, from unemployment to lack of patchy healthcare. "I am not a miracle-worker," he said. But he added: "We have come a long way. We can see the light on the horizon."

Reflecting public satisfaction with his presidency so far - polls suggest he has the approval of more than 60% of Americans - his words were drowned out by long, sustained applause when he said: "Today marks 100 days since I took the oath of office."

He said that he had been accused of trying to do too much, too soon, but no one should be surprised: he has only been fulfilling campaign promises. "I have come back to report to you we have begun work of remaking America," he said.

  25. Beyond Specter, Republicans have a steep hill to climb

    [...]

Specter's switch highlights a huge problem for the GOP: large swatches of the country are becoming "off limits." There are 12 Eastern states north of Virginia, and five more states bordering the Pacific. Of the 34 senators from these regions, only 4 are Republicans.

The picture in the House is just as grim. Many years ago, Republicans had a stronghold in New England, and they still had a toehold as late as the 1990s. But in 2008, they lost their last seat in the region: The score is now 22-0. Next door, New York State once had a thriving GOP that could win at every level. Those days are gone: Republicans hold no statewide offices, and only three of the state's 29 House districts. In a recent special election, they failed to recapture an upstate seat they had held for decades before 2006.

Republicans have just one of the 31 districts that are at least 40 percent African American and only seven of the 42 districts that are at least 40 percent Hispanic. More than 100 Democratic districts fall into one or more of the following categories: black, Hispanic, New England, New York. Without these seats, the GOP has to take about two-thirds of the rest in order to regain a majority. In the Senate, likewise, writing off the Democratic seats of the East and Pacific West means that they must win 71 percent of the remainder.

George H W Bush, addres before congress, March 6,1991

"I'm sure that many of you saw on the television the unforgettable scene of four terrified Iraqi soldiers surrendering. They emerged from their bunker broken, tears streaming from their eyes, fearing the worst. And then there was an American soldier. Remember what he said? He said: "It's okay. You're all right now. You're all right now." That scene says a lot about America, a lot about who we are. Americans are a caring people. We are a good people, a generous people. Let us always be caring and good and generous in all we do. "

    The petition's full wording:

    Dear Mr. Olbermann,

While General Electric, the parent-company of your MSNBC network, was negotiating a $126 billion taxpayer-funded bailout, you signed a new contract raising your salary from $4 million to $7.5 million annually. 46. At Airport in Murtha's District, Wartime Upgrades

    By Carol D. Leonnig
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Wednesday, April 29, 2009 5:55 PM

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- At the behest of Rep. John P. Murtha (D), chairman of the House defense appropriations subcommittee, the Pentagon has spent about $30 million equipping a little-used airport named for the congressman so that it can handle behemoth military aircraft and store combat equipment for rapid deployment to foreign battlefields.

Most of the expensive improvements, funded through appropriations approved by Murtha's committee, have not been used for their intended purpose. The projects delighted National Guard and reserve units based in Murtha's Pennsylvania district who have suffered from budget cuts, but critics charge that the expenditures are a waste of taxpayer dollars.

  49. More than six in 10 approve of Obama's job, nearly two-thirds view him favorably, and a majority believe he has gotten off to a solid start during his first three months on the job.

Perhaps most significantly, Americans so far find him to be likeable. More than 80 percent in the poll say they personally like Obama, even if they don’t agree with all of his policies. And respondents give him high scores on his personality, demeanor and leadership qualities.

  53. FACT CHECK: Obama disowns deficit he helped shape

    Apr 29, 5:55 PM (ET)

    By CALVIN WOODWARD

(AP) President Barack Obama speaks during a town hall meeting Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Fox Senior.

WASHINGTON (AP) - "That wasn't me," President Barack Obama said on his 100th day in office, disclaiming responsibility for the huge budget deficit waiting for him on Day One.

It actually was him - and the other Democrats controlling Congress the previous two years - who shaped a budget so out of balance.

And as a presidential candidate and president-elect, he backed the twilight Bush-era stimulus plan that made the deficit deeper, all before he took over and promoted spending plans that have made it much deeper still.

Nothing like good old facts, huh Capt?

  55. hahaha That Fredo is such a clown, isn't he? So funny.
Here's a line directly from the article he posted...

The economy has worsened under Obama, though from forces surely in play before he became president, and he can credibly claim to have inherited a grim situation.
    =========================
That Dems had a slight majority but not enough to overcome repug obstructionists is the sole reason things kept getting worse. "Stay the course" even as the whole country goes further downhill from bush policies is apparent to everybody but the few dumbasses still supporting the repugs. Denmac and Fredo will still be championing the failed repug policies no matter how much the facts prove them wrong. It would be sad if it wasn't so funny.
