Why Sarah Palin Should Fire Her Political Advisers

| | Comments (17)

What's wrong with Sarah Palin's political advisers?

Two days ago, she published an op-edin the Minneapolis Star Tribune calling for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

This was his first stab at being a serious policy person since her unsuccessful vice-presidential bid. And it was swing and a big miss--for multiple reasons.

1. No offense to the Star Tribune, but couldn't she get published on a more notable op-ed page. The New York Times? The Washington Post? The Wall Street Journal? The Star Tribune is not quite as prominent a launching pad. Was this op-ed rejected by any other paper? Can't she play in the big leagues?

2. An Alaska governor calling for oil drilling is nothing new. She led the GOP at its national convention in chanting, "Drill, baby, drill." Her challenge these days is to show that she knows, reads, and thinks about serious stuff. Dashing off an op-ed on this particular issue tells people nothing new about Palin. Hey, does she have anything smart to say about Afghanistan? (Can she see it from the top of Mount McKinley?)

3. Her arguments for drilling in Alaska were nothing new, as well. She merely recycled the same old--and misleading--contentions put forward repeatedly during the past few years. For instance, she claimed that oil from ANWR "could help satisfy US demand for more than 25 years." Note the use of the weasel words "could help." The rough government estimate is that ANWR holds about nine months' worth of oil, given US consumption patterns. She also relies on the canard that the "aggregated drilling footprint" would be less than 2000 acres. But this argument has long been debunked. You only can get to that figure if you don't count the full impact of roads, pipelines, and other facilities. (It's like counting a car's footprint as only the few square inches where the rubber of the tire literally hits the road.)

4. The op-ed reads like a political commercial. It ends: "Please contact Congress and ask that all options stay on the table as we formulate our needed energy plans." Palin's article shows no style and no depth of thought. It is closer to a script used for a 60-second political spot and reads like it was written by a direct-mail consultant.

At the end of the day, this op-ed demonstrates the opposite of what Palin has to do; it shows her as predictable, doctrinaire, and dependent on hacks. If she wants a national political career, her first move ought to be to fire whoever advised her to do this op-ed.

  1. Plus, Palin dissed the House Republicans by turning down an invitation to their annual winter retreat last weekend (claiming she had pressing state business in Alaska) and, instead, flying to DC to attend the exclusive Alfalfa Club Dinner (where President Obama would be present).

Could it be that she cares more for the celebrity side of politics more than the hard work of policy and strategy?

  2. Mr. Corn, please, get over Sarah Palin, who is irrelevant at this time and on to our stimulus, please.

At this critical stage in the economy, it would seem that the Senators would do everything they can to do something, to tell the American people, I am on your side, not always say no to the middle class and little people and always yes to the Special Interest Groups, yes to wars, yes to big oil and their tax breaks, and no to schools, education, infra structure, green jobs, too long denied and neglected. It is a sad fact that for average American citizens, the GOP is becoming the party of NO! We can not depend on the GOP to help us. In 2010, we will know what to do.

  3. Palin is GW bush in drag minus the intermittent aphasia but with the same deeply shalow knowledge of the world.

I sincerely hope she recruits Rush Limbaugh to run with her in 2012 but I think he lacks the cojones. I know he would never let anyone interview him who might laugh in his face at some of his lies.

I wonder if she should challenge Obama to a basketball game to prove her bona fides?

  4. Well, what can I say? She pals around with dopes!

  5. Palin is the best most qualified GOP politician - after McCain.

The GOP would have her in the WH if they had their way.

Nothing is wrong with Sarah Palin's political advisers that hasn't already infected most of their party.

I hope she stays front and center. She really does represent the new neocon and is the best the GOP has to offer.

  6. Who is the Political hack who wrote this hatchet job. The argument that it is only worth 9 months is idiotic. With that kind of logic, any addition in capacity would only add just a few points, dumbass. These idiots are same that say building a road will lead to fragmentation and disrupt ( fill in the blank with an animal). If this author would commit suicide; that would decrease the planets carbon footprint. All his actions are leading to GLOBAL WARMING. It doesn't matter what she says when your religion is the Democratic party. Give all your salary to Al Gore, only by doing that can you show your Love for our planet.

  7. wow were you seriously dwelling on this ridiculous distraction of a topic?
the israelis dropped illegal phosphorous and D.I.M.E. bombs on captive GAZA women and children for an entire month and you dare to ignore that while presenting us with this?
i think that maybe you should re-open the jon benet ramsey case.
    dude, you are the suck.

  8. David, I tend to agree with bacaangel. If you - the media - keep writing about her and talking about her - then she will stay in the minds of the american people. She is not worth it.

Please stay focused on more important issues.

Posted by: flan Author Profile Page | February 4, 2009 10:05 AM

  9. David,
I agree that there are many other important issues, however, Sarah Palin appears to be the star of the Republican party and doesn't seem to be going away, much as we would like her to.

Readers who suggest that the media stop writing about her seem to think that if you do, she'll go away. She won't. She is dishonest, in a position of power, and demonstrating a real potential to gain even more power in 2012 if she remains on her current trajectory. She seems willing to ignore rules to suit her ends, and so far, gets away with it.

Much as I hate to give her the attention she craves, I would much rather media other than Fox and Rush pay attention so that perhaps, all of you Sarah fans telling David and others to stop saying bad things about her will finally understand who this woman really is.

  10. the New York and DC papers only cover Communist news now and Gov Palin is far from your style of commie

that woman is so sharp that it takes an inteligent being to realize she blows smoke on dummies to make them feel better

like your type put other people down to make yourself feel better, she tries to come down a few notches so as to make you people not appear to be such babbling idiots

this Sarah we beg for her to desire more attention for herself but she says she has a job to do and doesnt have time to party with the Senators retreat--work must be done and she quietly does it as the morons write hate mail like this article. Dont worry about me offending your typical readers, theres no pictures so they dont understand me

  11. On the contrary Mr. Corn. You are the one who can't write or perhaps I should say can't think. You elitists think that nothing counts unless it is printed in the New York Times. Get over it. The Times will be bankrupt in a few months. Her arguments may not be new, but they don't need to be because they are cogent and accurate. How can you say that the the environment will be changed because of a few roads in that desolate place - absolutely ridiculous.

Sarah Palin will get this done as she always does. She will do it honestly and with diplomacy and with character as she always does.

As for you, try taking some vitamin b12 or something to unsoften your head.

  12. Cornie boy! Pls USE your brain. I know I know LiEbelism is a mental disorder, but TRY to think straight. First off, you state" This was his first stab at being a serious policy person since her unsuccessful vice-presidential bid. ""

Helloo?? Palin is a SHE nor a HE. Duh

Helloo again?? It was McCain who was the Presidential nominee, not Sarah.

The rest of your article clearly shows that you are suffering from Palin Derangement Syndrome- in full bloom ( like most of the libtards here)

    What a miserable phenomenon.

Your ignorance about Gov Palin and the great State of Alaska is truly mind blogging.

To Kacey who claims " She pals around with dopes!"

Where is the evidence of that insane comment? Do ALL liEberals suffer from delusions or what?

BO HUSSEIN is the one who pals around with DOPES AND TAX CHEATS. Further, he appears to be a terrorist lover.

Bacaangel claims that Palin is irrelevant. IF she is irrelevant, why do YOU and your Corn attack her? FYI Palin IS the great American success story!! You in your rate hole shouldn't even dream of trashing the single most successful governor in America today!!

And like a fool you actually support BO Hussein's SHAM Stimulus Bill - when the majority of AMERICANS are totally against it and see it for what it is?

Listen this guy's popularity has PLUMMETED and it appears you are the only one still believing he is a Messiah of some sort. Give it up!!

Kacey eeks out a pathetic LiEberal lie claiming that Palin is dishonest.

    PUT UP or SHUT UP.

Liberals have absolutely no common sense or wisdom - much like ZERO Hussein.

  13. JustFACTS:

Much as I hesitate to dignify your post with a response, I have to say, that it was Arcadua that suggested that Sarah Palin pals around with dopes, not I.

I do, however, stand my my statement that she is, in fact, dishonest. What that has to do with common sense or wisdom, I'm not sure, but then, ad hominem attacks don't really serve any useful purpose either.

  14. you are barking up the wrong tree here.
fact - palin has real accomplishments
fact -obama has no accomplishments , he is incompetent, has tendency to "vote present", is a confirmed radical, and has weak leadership qualities and it is already showing with his tax cheats, lobbyists and even plain old pay for play criminals, weak foreign policy and that generational theft act etc.

so why is palin smeared at every turn and obama lauded?

those who are not obamabots should and will ask that .

  16. Good Lord, you people are incredibly stupid.

Corn, you are the king of the stupids.

You piss and moan because the "hollowed" NY Times didn't publish her OP-ED. Probably had something to do with their unrelenting love affair with the loser that lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

You know, the one who is just 3 weeks has lost total control of his government! Hell, Nancy Pelosi is the President now!

Obama is EXACTLY the disaster that 60 million people who voted for Sarah Palin told you people he would be!

Corn ever one of your number "points are a "LIE" . Where did you learn to write? You need to go back to whatever correspondence school that ripped you off, and get your money back.

Sarah knows what she is doing. She is after all and oil and gas person.

Lets see, here's the short, short version of her resume:

    City Council Woman, Wasilla, Alaska

Mayor, Wasilla , Alaska. Two terms, term limited out.

President of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.

Chairman. Alaska Oil And Gas Conservation Commission. The largest oil and gas regulatory board of it's kind in the nation. STRONG ETHICS REFORM

    CURRENTLY:

    Governor Of Alaska.

Chairman of The Interstate Oil And Gas Compact Commission. As voted in by other Governors.

Chairman. National Governors Association's Natural Resource Committee. As voted unanimously by the other 49 Governors.

Palin is a recognized authority on energy, and environmental issues.

Vice Chairman. National Republican Governor's Association.

If you notice, her portfolio is filled with oil and gas work. I am QUITE SURE she knows a hell of a lot more about oil exploration than you do!

BTW, Corn, have you ever BEEN to ANWR? Or the proposed drilling area? Well, she HAS!

So step back and shut up. You are a fool, and a boring one at that.

Posted by: Gary Author Profile Page | February 9, 2009 1:20 AM

  17. Gary:
Her portfolio is filled with oil and gas work? You mean her imagination is filled. At the convention, she stated that the center piece of her accomplishments include the pipeline, saying:

“And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence."

In fact, TransCanada hopes to file its permit application with the Federal Regulatory Commission by the end of 2011, and go online by 2018. Not one one shovel has been turned, as she has since been quoted as saying. And the Bridge to Nowhere? That she was for, then against? Remember that one?
Then, there are her changing statistics from her own wildlife folk to get endangered species designations changed to allow drilling, changing travel paperwork after the fact, denying the use of City of Wasilla staff and materials for campaign purposes, spending $50,000 in city funds to re-decorate her office as mayor and telling the city council "I can do what ever I want until the court tells me I can't?"

These are lies, and blatant disregard for the rule of law. What a piece of work. I could go on, but it's well documented elsewhere.

As far as Obama's votes? While in the Illinois Senate, he voted "Present" a whole 3% of the time, for strategic reasons, just like every politician including McCain does at one time or another. Usually because of something in a particular version of a particular bill, because their leadership has told them to, or whatever. Get a clue about how politics usually works.
