Two weeks ago, the major national political narrative was congressional Republicans taking on the new president regarding a stimulus bill they decried as wasteful and ineffective. But that has shifted. The big-news story now is Republicans bickering among themselves. I was on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show on Monday night to discuss the take-the-money-or-not-debate that is weighing down (and perhaps further ruining) the Republican Party:
Meanwhile, there's more evidence of a snark-ridden riff within the GOP.
Look at what Republican Utah Governor Jon Huntsman (whom I mistakenly referred to as Jim on MSNBC) had to say--in an interview with The Washington Times:
The Republican governor of Utah on Monday said his party is blighted by leaders in Congress whose lack of new ideas renders them so "inconsequential" that he doesn't even bother to talk to them.
"I don't even know the congressional leadership," Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. told editors and reporters at The Washington Times, shrugging off questions about top congressional Republicans, including House Minority Leader John A. Boehner of Ohio and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "I have not met them. I don't listen or read whatever it is they say because it is inconsequential - completely."
That's cold--but, apparently, true.

DC,
Looking and sounding pretty good!
"What are they (the GOP) left with?"
McCain thinks it is the helicopters Bush and the GOP ordered!
Jindal thinks is it the money
I can't find many from the RW who seem to think anything of any substance.
I hope they keep it up - they are losing day by day.
The GOP has created this mess and they don't think they did, now they want to stop any repair because they think they never broke anything?
Palin/Jindal 2012!

Justice Secretary Jack Straw said he could not permit the release of records from 2003 discussions over the invasion of Iraq because it would cause too much "damage" to democracy.

The reference to those Republican governors "channeling their inner Reagan" was hilarious -- in two respects: (1) Reagan ran up huge federal deficits, despite his balanced budget/freemarket rhetoric; and (2) Gov. Haley Barbour couldn't wait to chow down at the federal trough when he wanted federal disaster assistance funds for Mississippi after Hurrican Katrina (and now he's going to stand on principle because this disaster is a banking/mortgage crisis rather than a natural disaster?).
What it tells me is that Republicans are at a loss for real principles to stand behind, because they have failed to honor their avowed principles in the past.

Black Republicans opening Duval office
The new headquarters will open Thursday, the only one like it in the state.
[...]
Local GOP Chairman Lenny Curry, who is white and a self-described "striving capitalist," said the black Republican office will help get his party's message out to a wider audience.
"It's not about titles. It's not about black-white," Curry said. "It's about competency and capability."

The GOP has found a way to expand - they will now have both black and white republican offices (starting in Duval) - seperate but totally equal!

david, jared bernstein was asked why didn't obama ask for a larger stimulus package? he answered something to the effect they had to craft the size of the package to the capacity where it could be competently overseen and it's spending managed. suggesting anything larger would have made it harder to do so. they wanted to be careful to avoid fraud and misuse. i hadn't heard this reason given before. do you think this answer valid?

David, appreciate what you are doing at the WH press briefs and wanted to suggest a question. On Monday I watched the Energy Summit on TV - I got to see and hear those involved. Seems a trivial thing but it OPEN! Unlike the Energy meetings held by Dick Cheney to determine our energy policy under Bush. No surprise that they were secret but can we now be told who attended those meetings and what was decided? We need to know so could you ask for us??? Thanks and keep up the good work.
