Palin a "Brainiac"? Then She's Really Dangerous

| | Comments (27)

So Sarah Palin is a "brainiac." That's what Elaine Lafferty proclaims. And the reason her proclamation is the least bit interesting is that Lafferty is a Democrat and the former editor-in-chief of Ms. magazine, the feminist journal. In a piece she posted yesterday, she notes she has "worked as a consultant with the McCain campaign since shortly after Palin's nomination" and has traveled with Palin on her "cramped" campaign plane.

I have no idea how a onetime feminist activist, a former journalist, and a present Democrat came to be working for an antiabortion, media-blasting Republican vice presidential candidate. But Lafferty wants us to know that Palin possesses "a mind that is thoughtful, curious, with a discernible pattern of associative thinking and insight. Palin asks questions, and probes linkages and logic that bring to mind a quirky law professor I once had."

This is troubling. Why? Because I had assumed that some of the idiotic and false statements Palin had made on the campaign trail were due to a certain amount of ignorance on her part. If she is as smart as Lafferty says, then she would be more dangerous if elected. No intelligent person would say some of the following things, unless she was purposefully trying to fool people.

* To boost her foreign policy cred, Palin said "you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska," and she maintained that she had experience dealing with trade delegations, presumably those from Russia. But according to her calendars, she never met with a Russian official and rarely met with any foreign officials to discuss trade or anything else.

* Palin repeatedly said she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere--even though many news organizations reported she had been a supporter of the project before Congress soured on the project. Why would an intelligent person keep repeating the same mistake?

* Palin said Barack Obama has been "palling around with terrorists"--using the present tense and the plural to hype Obama's past casual association with just one ex-radical. Her intelligence certainly did not motivate her to be precise.

* Palin equates Obama's tax plan--which calls for raising taxes on the rich and providing tax breaks to the middle class--as "socialism," even though progressive taxation has been law of the land for decades and the top rates Obama proposes would still be below the top rates of the Reagan era. Does this intelligent person not know these basic details? Plus, Palin presides over the most socialistic state in the country. Alaska assumes that its oil wealth is collectively owned by the citizens of the state. It allows big oil companies to exploit the resources, it taxes these companies, and then it distributes this money to its residents. Talk about sharing the wealth.

* After an independent investigation in Alaska declared that Palin had violated the state's ethics law, she claimed that she had been exonerated. It was as if she could not understand the straightforward language of the report.

There are other examples of non-brainiac statements Palin has made. So the question for Lafferty is, if Palin is so intelligent, why is she making all these misleading and false statements? Lafferty writes, "I saw a woman who knows exactly who she is. Well, she does seem to know exactly what she's doing. But there is this: if she's sooooo smart, why has her approval rating plummeted sooooo much? Please, no blaming the media.) Lafferty notes she does not know if Palin will triumph next week but that she is sure that Palin's "time will come." If it does, it will not be because of Palin's overwhelming intelligence, it will be due to her ability to play politics as usual--and as calculatingly--as any other pol.

  1. DC,

Palin/Lafferty give the concept of "brainiac" a whole new meaning.

Dinosaurs walk with men - the earth is only 6,000 years old and Palin needed to be blessed to keep the witches away (and not just on Halloween).

Seems a brainiac would be smart enough to use a rubber after 40?

Maybe it is just me . . .

    Thanks!

That's why he's spending these last few days calling me every name in the book. I'm sorry to see my opponent sink so low. Lately, he's called me a socialist for wanting to roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans so we can finally give tax relief to the middle class. By the end of the week, he'll be accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in Kindergarten.

  8. David,

Palin's statement on being able to see Russia was, I think, an illustration of how close Alaska is to Russia; you can actually see Russia from Alaska. We have fighter planes stationed in Alaska that are sent up to intercept Russian fighters and bombers on a regular basis; its a game Russia plays.

As far as dealing with trade delegations don't rule out Canada; she probably had to deal with Canada in getting the gas pipeline routed through that country.

Palin had made supportive statements about the bridge to nowhere at a time when she was only an observer to the project, before she became governor. The U.S. Senate (including Obama) had cleverly both covered its butt and bowed to threats from Senator Stevens (know him?) by sending earmark funds to Alaska, but with no project specified. The governor of Alaska then used the funds and awarded a contract for the Bridge to Nowhere. When Palin became governor she canceled the contract and used the funds elsewhere.

The use of the plural "terrorists" is accurate since there is also a Mrs. Ayers, who was also a terrorist, who also chummed with Obama.

Is Obama's tax plan socialism? Here's what the Christian Science Monitor says:

"But what about a milder form of socialism? If reckoned as an attitude rather than a set of guidelines for running an economy, socialism might well describe Senator Obama's economics. Anyone who speaks glibly of "spreading the wealth around" sees wealth not as resulting chiefly from individual effort, initiative, and risk-taking, but from great social forces beyond any private producer's control."

You might not agree, but some, including Palin might.

Regarding "Troopergate", Palin was exonerated because because she did no wrong. The report chides her for not keeping her husband in line. Bad, bad, bad!

  9. Palin Target Of New Ethics Complaint

CBS News Investigative Unit Has Learned Of New Complaint Related To Travel By Alaska Governor's Children

CBS News has obtained a copy of the complaint that Frank Gwartney, a retired lineman in Anchorage filed last Friday, with Alaska’s Attorney General, Talis Colber in Juneau. “Palin ran on the platform of ethics, transparency and anti-corruption. I’m tired of the hypocrisy that exists in Government and people need to know the truth,” said Gwartney.

The complaint against Governor Palin, alleges Misuse of Official Position: “Gov. Palin attempted to and in fact did use her official position for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits for her daughters...” All the allegations contained in the complaint are related to state reimbursed travel.

  18. Many things trouble me about Palin and I will state that paramount among these troubling things are Palin's deeply conservative views.

However, Palin's inability to defend her views and to respond to fairly basic questions would seem to indicate to me that she is not the world's smartest woman. I think a bright high school student (one who does debate or model UN) could have done a better job than Palin did in the Couric interview...the Williams interview...the Gibson interview etc.

Palin may have some qualities which are well-suited to politicians (her ability to lie, to manipulate crowds etc.) but I am not sure that those are the qualities which I want as a president (personally, I prefer politicians who do not engage in overt lies and who do not rely on attacks as opposed to discussions about their own intentions once they are elected).

  21. We voted this evening and we were never undecided.

Time is short for McCain to turn this election around. I don't think he can do it. He no longer enjoys much support from his party.

The GOPher have an excuse and can point fingers in a circular firing squad but it is clearly the failed ideology of the neo-liberal neocons and their fake faith and crony capitalism that have broken the GOP.

It will be all Palin's fault for some all McCain's fault for others while the 800 pound elephant in the tent dances around in a pink tutu. (wearing bright red lipstick - you betcha!)

If Palin is the face of the new neoconservative GOP - that party is over. It couldn't happen to a more deserving group.

  22. The Mandatory Rejection of Sarah Palin

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca/the-mandatory-rejection-o_b_139062.html

'Nuf said...Palin is the Manchurian Candidate. She was schooled in the "how to become a Rovian Republican” school long before she was picked as McCain's VP. She's not the Washington outsider she claims to be.

She speaks Orwellian speak as well as Cheney/Bush. She says she’s a reformer, but in practically the same breath she's using Washington lobbyists to secure lots of pork - including the bridge to nowhere. Remember, she kept the money.

She's not an intellectual in regards to being able to discuss detailed economic policies and complicated world issues, but she is very smart politically. That's the problem. Do not underestimate this woman.

If she doesn't get into the White House this time she will keep trying - and I truly believe that if McCain is elected he will die while in office - perhaps accidentally on purpose. And the more she tries, I fear, the better she will get. Unless, of course the mask comes all the way off and everyone sees her for the real hypocrite she is.

But the first step is to make sure she doesn't get this chance. That is why we need to get out the vote. That is the only way we can make sure to beat the voter purging, voter intimidating Republican machine.

Everyone knows that Gore won Florida. Just imagine how different it would have been if the voter turnout was like what everyone is expecting this year. But expectations don't vote - people do.

We need to turn expectations into reality. So, please, talk to everyone you know and those you don't - talk to people on the grocery store line or at the train station or bus stop. This is a very pivotal point in this country's history. I, for one, am going to do my part to make sure that the right person gets the job as president.

  23. Via CNN:

Blitzer: Republican VP Candidate Sarah Palin now speaking out openly about her intentions in 2012 if - if - she and John McCain were to lose this contest next Tuesday. In an interview with ABC News, Sarah Palin is now saying she would be interested in remaining a serious national political figure going ahead to 2012. She was asked, what happens in 2012 if you lose on Tuesday - do you simply go back to Alaska - Elizabeth Vargas of ABC News asked her - and Palin said this, and I'll read it to you verbatim according to an ABC transcript:

Absolutely not. I think that if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender, I think that some of the political shots that we've taken - that that would bring this whole - and I'm not doing this for naught."

And that's a direct quote from Sarah Palin.

  24. Dana Bash follows up with a Republican official's reaction:

Blitzer: Any reaction yet, Dana, from this blunt statement that she would in fact be interested in leading the Republican Party going forward after Tuesday if they lose?

Bash: I just got off the phone, Wolf, with a senior McCain adviser and I read this person the quote and I think it's fair to say that this person was speechless. There was a long pause and I just heard a "huh" on the other end of the phone. I mean, this is certainly not a surprise to anybody who has watched Sarah Palin that she is interested in potentially a future national run. Certainly she is being urged to be a lot of people inside the Republican Party if they do lose, but it is an if, and people inside the McCain campaign - they do not want ANY discussion that has in "if" in front of it six days before the election.

PHOENIX -- (PTSD News) -- To counter Senator Barack Obama's unprecedented half-hour "Closing Argument to the Everyman" that aired on several networks, Senator John McCain announced that he will be airing his own closing argument on Fox tomorrow night. 27. In response to Murad:

"Palin's statement on being able to see Russia was, I think, an illustration of how close Alaska is to Russia; you can actually see Russia from Alaska."

Grade schoolers know how close Alaska is to Russia . This isn't privileged information.

"We have fighter planes stationed in Alaska that are sent up to intercept Russian fighters and bombers on a regular basis; its a game Russia plays."

If that was the case, it would have been easy enough for a woman of her (newly reported) intellect to articulate that as efficiently as you just did. However, given several opportunities to clarify this statement, she never did.

"As far as dealing with trade delegations don't rule out Canada; she probably had to deal with Canada in getting the gas pipeline routed through that country."

    "Probably"?

"Palin had made supportive statements about the bridge to nowhere at a time when she was only an observer to the project, before she became governor. The U.S. Senate (including Obama) had cleverly both covered its butt and bowed to threats from Senator Stevens (know him?) by sending earmark funds to Alaska, but with no project specified. The governor of Alaska then used the funds and awarded a contract for the Bridge to Nowhere. When Palin became governor she canceled the contract and used the funds elsewhere."

This seems like an excessively generous account of what happened (except for the omission of McCain from the members list of the U.S. Senate), but even if it's largely true, she still accepted the dreaded earmarks and used them. Historically, Alaska has been the biggest beneficiary of government largess of any state. If that's not "redistributing wealth" I don't know what is.

"The use of the plural "terrorists" is accurate since there is also a Mrs. Ayers, who was also a terrorist, who also chummed with Obama."

Um, I think she was already referring to Ayers. Was there someone else?

"Is Obama's tax plan socialism? Here's what the Christian Science Monitor says:"

Obama's tax plan is the same tax plan that has been used in this country since 1863 when Republican president Abraham Lincoln introduced the progressive tax code.

This is a particularly dirty and desperate ploy on the part of the McCain campaign, seeing as how McCain has always supported the progressive tax code. Split hairs over to what degree it is used, but don't slam your opponent as socialist (read: "anti-American") just because he was the first one to bring it up.

"You might not agree, but some, including Palin might."

Of course she agrees, but I don't really think her willingness to embrace negative smear campaigning is really being questioned.

"Regarding "Troopergate", Palin was exonerated because because she did no wrong. The report chides her for not keeping her husband in line. Bad, bad, bad!"

The report finds that she violated the Alaska State Executive Ethics Law. Though it holds no criminal penalties, it is neither an "exoneration" nor a "chiding." It opens her up to punishment by the State, as well as to civil suits by those she is found to have maligned.

But the point Mr. Corn is making is that she simply ignored this finding. Not downplaying it or spinning it, just not acknowledging its existence. At first this seems Orwellian to the extreme, until you discover that she didn't even read the report and that her advisers read it for her and told her what to say. if she doesn't know the truth, it's not lying, right?
