How uninformed is Sarah Palin? I don't mean to suggest she is dumb in the sense of intelligence ability--though she may be. But despite the fact she has good campaign skills--which could be on display during her debate with Joe Biden--Palin is dumb in the sense of don't-know-much-about-history or anything else. Ignorance, you might call it. Sure, she must know plenty about Alaska issues, but she seems to be awfully unfamiliar with anything beyond that.
Take the latest clip from her interterview with Katie Couric. What drew the most attention was her inability to name any other Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade. It may be elitist to say this, but she looked the fool, trying to answer the question ("What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?") without citing any specific decision. (Dred Scott, anyone?) The subsequent chortling among commentators and bloggers was warranted.
But what struck me was this exchange:
Couric: Do you think there's an inherent right to privacy in the Constitution?
Palin: I do. Yeah, I do.Couric: The cornerstone of Roe v. Wade.
Palin: I do. And I believe that individual states can best handle what the people within the different constituencies in the 50 states would like to see their will ushered in an issue like that.
As my colleague at MotherJones.com, Kevin Drum, pointed out, many conservatives do not accept that the Constitution contains a right to privacy and argue that it's judicial activism to see such a right in that grand ol' document. Is Palin breaking with this traditional conservative position?
I doubt it. She probably didn't know better. But her convoluted explanation of her position demonstrates she doesn't understand the basics of the Constitution. First she says there is an inherent right to privacy in the Constitution, then she adds that this right is dependent on what "different constituencies in the 50 states would like to see."
A federal right is not dependent on the "will ushered" in the 50 different states. Otherwise, what good are any of the rights outlined in the Bill of Rights? Sometimes a state may act in a way that is seen by some as a restriction on a constitutional right--say, imposing gun control measures--but then the matter goes to the federal courts for resolution. In the United States, a right guaranteed in the Constitution is not open to 50 different interpretations.
Palin is running for a position in which, if she wins, she will have to take a vow to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution" (per Article II, Section I of the Constitution). Is it too much to expect her to understand that document and its history?

Comments
DC,
"Is it too much to expect her to understand that document and its history?"
That is obviously a "gotcha journalism" question.
"A federal right is not dependent on the "will ushered" in the 50 different states. Otherwise, what good are any of the rights outlined in the Bill of Rights?"
It is nice to see you point to the contradiction - I don't think she has been coached as well as the GOP hopes.
Thanks for all of your work!

Gov. Palin's performances are getting to the point at which one has to question both her depth of knowledge of American government and history and her ability to think things through, especially on the fly. I mean, why couldn't she say, "I can't cite lots of Supreme Court decisions by name -- I'm not a lawyer -- but Roe v. Wade continues in the sad tradition of Dred Scott, which denied the humanity of another class of Americans. So, though I think Americans have a right to privacy, that includes the unborn. And abortion violates not only their right to privacy, but their very right to life, which I think trumps privacy when one weighs legal rights." I mean, that's a coherent defense of the anti-abortion position, and anyone who's anti-abortion ought to be able to spin that out at the drop of a hat. Then, if Ms. Couric pushed further, Gov. Palin would have had time to regroup and say she didn't like the decisions giving local governments the right to use imminent domain to seize private property for commercial purposes, and the recent decisions giving terror suspects or enemy combatants who aren't U.S. citizens rights that are similar to those of U.S. citizens. Now, I don't agree with those stances, but they seem to be fairly easy to articulate and in line with her views. She wouldn't have had to name the cases to at least appear intelligent. And why in heaven's name couldn't she just say she read the Anchorage daily and also kept up on the 'Net with the national, world and business news from the WSJ, NY Times, Washington Post and (to cover her with conservatives) the Washington Times? I mean, how hard is that?

Palin says "I'm a Federalist" and that "states should have more say in the laws of their lands"- but doesn't a Federalist advocate for centralizing power in the US (federal) government?

PALIN IS DUMBER THAN A BOX OF ROCKS
ANCHORAGE -- Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago -- about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct -- the teacher said.

McCain pulling out of Michigan
John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.
McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.
McCain's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sarah Palin Doesn't Meet British Ambassador!
The Mail Online is reporting that:
Sarah Palin has committed yet another political blunder after claiming she had held talks with a British ambassador - talks that never actually took place.
In an answer to questions about her foreign policy experience ahead of tonight's make-or-break vice presidential TV debate, her aides listed numerous contacts with foreign officials - including Britain's ambassador to Washington, Sir Nigel Sheinwald.
It seems that Sir Nigel was suppose to have been at a US Govenors meeting last July, but had to pull out at the last minute. He did not attend the meeting!
And yet, today Sarah's aids claimed she not only attended the meeting with him but actually met Sir Nigel and claimed it as foreign policy experience.
Incredible, they are just making this stuff up and hoping no one calls them on it.
But it didn't work out in this case.
However the meeting never occurred. Officials at the embassy swiftly contacted the McCain-Palin campaign to inform them of the discrepancy.
A British Embassy spokesman said the error arose after Sir Nigel's name was listed among those who had attended a US Governor's meeting in July.

Public Policy Polling surveyed four states immediately after the Republican convention and then again three weeks later. In those states, Gov. Sarah Palin's favorability has dropped by a net average of 12 points, and Sen. Barack Obama's standing in the horse race has improved by an average of seven points.

On NPR, McCain Exaggerates Past Relationship with Palin
Then came a dramatic statement. Inskeep asked, "Is there an occasion when you can imagine turning to Gov. Palin for advice on a foreign policy crisis." McCain replied, I've turned to her advice many times in the past. Many times in the past? According to the McCain campaign, McCain first met Palin in February at a Washington meeting of the National Governors Association.

If it's one thing you can always count on from many on the the left in this country, it's the utterly contemptable attitude they display towards anyone who doesn't agree with them.
I'm talking about the IN-tolerant, ugly-talking, condescending, judgmental, "I'm-smarter-than-you" crap they constantly spew.
Barack Obama is just a more refined and genteel version , nothing more.
I view him as a "conveyor belt", a Trojan Horse that. if elected, will finally give the worn out 60's radicals their last hurrah. But what a party they will have.
It's not so much him I'm truly concerned about. It's his mentors, advisors, and confidants.
I am willing to bet money that at least 50% of his supporters do not have any idea whatsoever about the character or track record of the man nor do they even care. Hell, a lot of them don't even know or care what he intends to do if elected!

David,
Please report on this. General McKeirnan statement proves that is was the Sunni Awakening that paved the way for reduced violence, not the "surge".
Don't you agree?
Palin Gets Afghanistan Commander's Name, Strategy Wrong
Palin thinks our commander in Afghanistan is someone named "McClellan." It is, I believe, McKiernan. And Palin is DEAD WRONG. He absolutely said that tribal involvement in Afghanistan COIN strategy would not work.
McKiernan: "I do think there's a role for traditional tribal authorities and tribal structure in Afghanistan, in the rural areas especially, to play in a community-based sense of security, of connection with the government, and of environmental considerations. But I think that has to be led, that tribal engagement, it has to be led by the Afghan government. I specifically tell my chain of command in ISAF [International Security Assistance Force, the name for NATO's mission in Afghanistan] that I don't want the military to be engaging the tribes to do that. It has to be through the Afghan government to do that. But of course, there's danger in that. There's always, "Is this particular tribe, is it being reached out to for all the right reasons?" That has to be watched very closely."
McKiernan: "First of all, please don't think that I'm saying there's no room for tribal engagement in Afghanistan, because I think it's very necessary. But I think it's much more complex environment of tribal linkages, and intertribal complexity than there is in Iraq. It's not as simple as taking the Sunni Awakening and doing the Pashtun Awakening in Afghanistan. It's much more complex than that."

Palin really impressed me during the debates. Winkin instead of Blinkin. She knew Lincoln's General McClellan. Near the end she described the change we need in leadership explicitly.
But we're in trouble if McLellan is the General in Afghanistan, and McCain is for the change she described.
She did better and had the talking points down hard. But take off the $3,000 hair and makeup, the $10,000 wardrobe and the $2,000 glasses and she's just another hockey mom in a state without a franchise. Take off the lipstick and you haven't got a pitpull or a pig, just a folksy Alaskan spin meister.

She's "the real deal"?? lol A 'real deal' woud've answered the questions instead of keeping hitting the rote talking points no matter what the question was. She continued the lie about Obama's tax plan and lied about mcsame's record. That's not real (my friends... haha).
Now Tim, reread what I've typed again. Notice that one can point out her failings just like we would for anybody else, WITHOUT being condescending or sexist. Those are two talking points they've plugged in as a defense mechanism.
