Sarah Palin's speech deserved rave reviews (for her performance) and scathing rebuttals (for her mugging of facts). Regarding the latter, see AP's brutal run-down and the Anchorage Daily News's fact-checking of her speech.
Her speech was laden with falsehoods. Still, the Hypocrite of the Night award has to go to Rudy Giuliani. He preceded Palin and fired off a slash-and-burn assault on Barack Obama. He blasted Obama as inexperienced and the candidate of Hollywood celebrities and the "left-wing media." He derided Obama for having once been a community organizer, as if that's not a real job. (The GOP delegates, most of them looking rather well-heeled, laughed along.) Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, also slammed Obama for supposedly thinking that Palin's hometown is "not cosmopolitan enough."
Whoa. Giuliani, the onetime wife-cheater, slapping anyone else for being "cosmopolitan" was absurd. After all, Giuliani used to live with a gay couple in a fancy Upper East Side apartment while he was in the middle of a divorce. It don't get much more "cosmopolitan" than that. He also has dressed in drag more than your average failed presidential candidate.
Giuliani's speech was the pander of the night and a hateful exercise in faux populism. But he sure got into it. Perhaps he wants to be Palin's veep running-mate in 2012.

Running Against Themselves
The difficulty for the Republican ticket in talking about change and acting like insurgents is that they have been running Washington for most of the last eight years.

While everyone was praising her speech and performance regardless of opinion, it is not mentioned that she had a good speechwriter and that she could read. Many of the sarcastic comments had too much background information about the incidents for her to be aware of.
Regardless of who wrote the speech (and that would be interesting to find out) the venom was unmistakable. But most disturbing to me was the wolflike reaction of the audience to this venom. Our country is infested with these ignorant right wing self righteous people and they are a burden to any decent leader trying to create needed domestic programs for the nation. Most obvious is their hypocrisy between living the godly life and the loud raucous support of endless war to kill the enemy - usually people of a different culture and/or color. Incidentally where were any black people among the sea of white in that vast auditorium? I hope every black voter will come out in force in the election and get Obama over the top.
I think that the pregnancy of Palin's daughter says it all. The obvious failure of an abstinence program instead of sex education and information is the result and instead of using her as a poster girl of love and respect, she should be criticized for acting irresponsibly as a warning to other teenagers. Maybe it was a deliberate slap at her mother but forcing a marriage because of publicity at that early age makes no sense.
I hope exposure in upcoming debates and investigation of Palin's questionable background will educate people to what is in store if they vote for this dynamic duo.

The hard data is in. The Arctic ice sheet has GROWN by an area twice the size of Germany since this time last year.
Data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has indicated a dramatic increase in sea ice extent in the Arctic regions. The growth over the past year covers an area of 700,000 square kilometers: an amount twice the size the nation of Germany.

It is still the 4th smallest "melt season" ice cover in at least the last 30 years. Last year was the "all time low".
Interesting point about how the winds and snow cover can increase/insulate the ice from melting/growing, though.

You wouldn't know that this is such a critical election by watching the convention last night. I know we had our week. And the Republicans deserve theirs. But it's been amazing for me to watch over the last two nights. If you sit there, and you watch it. You're hearing a lot about John McCain, and he's got a compelling biography as a P.O.W.
You're hearing an awful lot about me. Most of which is not true.
What you're not hearing is a lot about you.
You haven't heard one word about how they're going to make the health system work - so that when a union is negotiating with a company it's not all just a discussion about higher premiums and you guys can actually start talking about higher wages and benefits.
You haven't heard one word about how we're gonna create more apprenticeship programs like the ones we have here. Or give other people a chance to train in new trades.
You haven't heard one word about getting serious about green and alternative energy. The kind of work that is resulting in all the expansion and hiring here.
You haven't heard one word about how we're going to strengthen unions so that working people get a decent stake.
You haven't heard one word about how we're going to improve math and science education so that we can hire more engineers to create more products in green technology.
You haven't heard one word about how we're going to deal with any aspect of the economy that is affecting you and your pocket day to day.
Haven't heard one word about it. Literally. Two nights. They have not said a word about it. They have not said a word about it. They've had a lot to say about me. But they haven't had anything to say about you.
And the thing that I'm insisting on in this election is that we can't keep playing the same political games we always play.

"WASHINGTON (CBS) ― The presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain is now even at 42 percent, according to a new CBS News poll conducted Monday-Wednesday of this week. Twelve percent are undecided according to the poll, and one percent said they wouldn't vote.
This is in contrast to a poll conducted last weekend, where the Obama-Biden ticket led McCain-Palin by eight points, 48 percent to 40 percent."

Governor Palin, Put Away Falsehood
As Americans and people of faith from around the country, we were extremely disappointed in Sarah Palin's divisive, sarcastic, and often deceptive address last night at the Republican National Convention. We call on her not only as a political figure, but also as a prominent Christian, to recommit herself to campaigning in good faith, with a strong commitment to truth-telling.
As Christians, we are called to be respectful and loving toward our neighbors, honoring their intentions even if we disagree with their plans. We are also called to "put away falsehood" (Eph 4:25) and to refrain from slandering, belittling, or speaking out of contempt for anyone.
If these are the standards God has set for us in our personal lives, our church communities, and our neighborhoods, how much more so should they be the standards of those Christians who choose to be in the public eye? Shouldn't we also expect our brothers and sisters in politics to speak the truth in love and to extend respect and goodwill even to those with whom they disagree?
Sarah Palin has shaped much of her life around her Christian faith [1]. Indeed, it has been continually suggested that one of the major reasons John McCain chose Palin as his running-mate was her Christian faith and her ability to energize evangelical Christian voters. Thus, it is no stretch to say that Palin has suddenly become one of the most visible faces of Christianity in today’s political scene.
As such, we believe she has a calling even higher than her responsibility to her party's victory in November - a calling to represent Jesus to the rest of the world. This is why her speech at the Republican National Convention last night was so disappointing to us at the Matthew 25 Network.
In questioning not only Senator Obama’s policies but also his motivations, and mocking his career, Palin went far beyond what could be considered acceptable disagreement and into what seemed like open contempt for a political opponent.
To be blunt, we saw very little of Jesus’ love in Sarah Palin's speech last night, as she heaped contempt on those who disagree with her politically, while offering no vision for how to resolve the critical issues facing Americans today like job loss, health care, growing child poverty rates and the war in Iraq.
Moreover, as has been documented by major media sources including the Associated Press [2], Palin spoke falsehoods not only about her own record, but about Barack Obama's record as a State Senator and as a U.S. Senator. As Christians, we are called throughout Scripture to speak the whole truth, to put away falsehood, to bear true witness even when it hurts our own interests. The name of Jesus should never be associated with falsehoods or deception, but last night, in Sarah Palin’s speech, we believe it was.
Therefore, we in the Matthew 25 Network call on Gov. Palin to repudiate her attitude of contempt towards her political opponents and to tell the whole truth, not only for the sake of a more honorable politics, but also for the sake of our Christian witness in the world.
Senator McCain is no less responsible because he selected Gov. Palin and praised her speech, and he claims to be a Christian as well. It is ill-fitting to use Christian identity and language for one's political advantage without seeking to live up to that high calling. Ultimately, as the Presidential candidate, Governor Palin's tone and infidelity to truth reflect negatively on Senator McCain as well.

The poll numbers won't mean much until a week or so (maybe 10 days). Both camps will have convention movement up and down. A convention "bump" will be an amount that is sustained in the numbers a week or so out.
McCain has a very steep hill to climb.
Unless the GOP convention flips a few battleground states - he has lost.
This was the case before Palin so unless she can bring more than just Alaska it will be all up to Johnny boy. The "four more years" belongs to him and will be very hard to shake off.
The GOP has a very hard sell convincing anybody the answer to the GOP mess is more of the same. Maybe it will work.

Alaska police union files complaint against Palin
The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed Wednesday by the police officers union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper Mike Wooten, an ex-brother-in-law of Palin who is at the center of the "Troopergate" scandal.
The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply."

Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Thursday, Sep 4, 2008
The two party conventions showcased vastly different directions for our country. Senator Obama and Senator Biden offered the new ideas and positive change America needs and deserves after eight years of failed Republican leadership. Senator McCain and Governor Palin do not.
After listening to all the speeches this week, I heard nothing that suggests the Republicans are ready to fix the economy for middle class families, provide quality affordable health care for all Americans, guarantee equal pay for equal work for women, restore our nation's leadership in a complex world or tackle the myriad of challenges our country faces. So, to slightly amend my comments from Denver: NO WAY, NO HOW, NO McCAIN-PALIN.

Record ice loss in August
Following a record rate of ice loss through the month of August, Arctic sea ice extent already stands as the second-lowest on record, further reinforcing conclusions that the Arctic sea ice cover is in a long-term state of decline. With approximately two weeks left in the melt season, the possibility of setting a new record annual minimum in September remains open.

William Chapman, a researcher with the Arctic Climate Research Center at the University of Illinois, tells DailyTech that this year the Arctic was "definitely colder" than 2007. Chapman also says part of the reason for the large ice loss in 2007 was strong winds from Siberia, which affect both ice formation and drift, forcing ice into warmer waters where it melts.
Most concern has focused on the Arctic regions, rather than Antarctica. Recent research has INDICATED ANTARCTICA IS ON A LONG TERM COOLPNG TREND, for reasons which remain unclear.

ABOUT McCAIN
I saw the 'Maverick' McCain tribute video [lastnight]. They left out the part about his napalming asian men, women and children basically because they were asian. Also not mentioned was the incident when as a USN pilot he almost singlehandedly took out an aircraft carrier. Unfortunately it was one of ours.
When dad was mentioned in the video, Four Star Admiral John S. McCain Jr., his ramrodding the coverup of the Israeli attack on a basically unarmed USS Liberty in June 1967 during The Six Days War is not noted.
