Will McCain Make Exorcism a Campaign Issue?

As John McCain moves to select a running mate, it seems--at least for the moment--that the star of potential veep nominee Bobby Jindal, the Louisiana governor, is rising. This is good news for Democrats.

On one level, Jindal is impressive. The son of Indian immigrants, he's only 37 years old, and he has already been elected a member of the U.S. House and a governor. (Talk about a Junior Achiever!) Yet can McCain, who claims Obama is not sufficiently experienced to become president, say with a straight face that Jindal is prepared to take the helm. And Jindal's record in Louisiana--including his stint in charge of the state health department--has its spotty moments. Then there's that exorcism.

Blogs and news outfits have already picked over a 1994 essay that Jindal, a convert to Catholicism, wrote for a Catholic magazine, describing an exorcism of a friend in which he was an observer/participant. Not only did Jindal and his pals manage to drive the Satanic demon out of their friend; the exercise, Jindal suggested, also cured her skin cancer. The article was entitled, "Physical Dimensions of Spiritual Warfare."

Americans tend to be quite religious. Most tell pollsters they believe in heaven and hell (and assume they are heading upward, not downward, once they expire). Many tend to believe literally in the devil. But how will an amateur exorcism--that violated Catholic law (which allows only certified exorcists to perform the ritual in very limited circumstances)--play with, say, swing voters? No doubt, Jindal will have to discuss the episode. With Oprah perhaps? That would indeed be Must See TV.

Here's one excerpt of his article that an interviewer might want to ask about:

While Alice and Louise held Susan, her sister continued holding the Bible to her face. Almost taunting the evil spirit that had almost beaten us minutes before, the students dared Susan to read biblical passages. She choked on certain passages and could not finish the sentence "Jesus is Lord." Over and over, she repeated "Jesus is L..L..LL," often ending in profanities. In between her futile attempts, Susan pleaded with us to continue trying and often smiled between the grimaces that accompanied her readings of Scripture. Just as suddenly as she went into the trance, Susan suddenly reappeared and claimed "Jesus is Lord."
With an almost comical smile, Susan then looked up as if awakening from a deep sleep and asked, "Has something happened?" She did not remember any of the past few hours and was startled to find her friends breaking out in cheers and laughter, overwhelmed by sudden joy and relief.

As a vice presidential candidate, Jindal would be under great pressure--and ought to be--to make other participants in the event available for interview. In the article, he used fake names. But he insisted every single detail was true. Given that such an event must have had a profound impact on him--he came face to face with a real demon!-- this possible president-in-waiting would be obligated to prove that he got the story right, that he was not exaggerating. (Remember how the press and the GOPers went after Al Gore's claims in 2000 with a vengeance?) And the media, of course, would be on the hunt to find "Susan" to get her side of the tale. (Enquiring minds might want to know if her skin cancer is still gone.)

Is Jindal prepared to disclose more about this exorcism? Is the McCain campaign prepared to see more disclosed? The event is a legitimate target for voter interest and media scrutiny. After all, Representative Dennis Kucinich had to explain his UFO siting. And Jindal should not be allowed to hide behind the cloaks of faith and personal privacy. Barack Obama had no choice but to explain his relationship to a particular minister. He didn't duck the issue by claiming it was a private relationship based on faith. So if Jindal is anointed by McCain, the exorcism will be fair game.

America may or may not be ready for a national political debate about exorcism and Satanic demons. By picking Jindal as a running mate, McCain would give the country a chance to find out.

  1. I hope McCain picks Bobby. He isn't a serious candidate unless he hooks onto some nutcase to service the rabid right.

I think I called it when I said he would be the gaffe that keeps on giving.

Now he and his campaign have become a joke, not a funny one just a sad joke.

    Thanks!

  3. DC,

    Great observation.

As you imply from your points in this article, Obama's description's of his drug use need to be exposed to the same scrutiny. After all, breaking the law is certainly of more interest to the American public than braking Cathlic Church rules.

Is Obama prepared to disclose more about his drug use? Is the Obama campaign prepared to see more disclosed? "The event is a legitimate target for voter interest and media scrutiny."

America may or may not be ready for a national political debate about cocaine use by a Presidential candidate. By picking Obama as the presumptive Dem candidate, Obama would give the country a chance to find out.

    Thanks for all you do.

  4. Anbar Sheik Cited By McCain Was Assassinated Last Year

The major Sunni sheik who John McCain said was protected by the surge and subsequently helped lead the Anbar Awakening, was actually assassinated by an al-Qaeda led group in midst of the surge.

On Tuesday evening, McCain falsely claimed that the downturn in violence in Iraq's Anbar province was a result of the surge, when in fact the surge began months afterward. Moreover, he said, if it weren't for the work of U.S. forces, the major Sunni figure leading that awakening wouldn't have had the protection he needed.

"Colonel MacFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks," said the Senator. "Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening."

The gaffe that keeps on giving.

I wonder if we will ever see his mental health records? All POW's are likely PTSD sufferers. It would explain some of McCain's thin skinned - knee-jerk responses. The inability to remember stuff is just regular dementia. It is normal for a 70 year old to forget stuff, we all have older family members.

  5. Question asked of Obama -

"If you had to do it over again, knowing what you know now, would you support the surge:"

    Answer by Obama -

"No, because keep in mind that question, you wouldn't ... but keep in mind that kind of hypothetical is very difficult to know hindsight is 20-20 ... later ... but I think that what I'm absolutely convinced of is that at that time we had to change the political debate because the view of the Bush administration at that time was one that I just disagreed with."

I wonder if we will ever see his mental health records? All drug users are likely memory loss sufferers. It would explain some of Obama's cryptic, nonsense responses. The inability to form logical answers to questions is just regular drug-induced brain-trauma. It is normal for a former drug user to forget stuff, we all know former drug users.

    Sad, really.

  6. Barack Obama has won the argument on Iraq. The latest NBC/WSJ Poll, released tonight, shows that 60% of the voters think a timetable is a good idea, and 30% think it's a bad idea. Arguments about the success of the surge are irrelevant.

This is not helping John McCain, who is floundering and (out of frustration, presumably) lashing out at Obama and taking a ton of heat for it. It's getting so bad, even Business Week says John McCain's Brand has Jumped The Shark. Ouch.

  8. Judging from this week’s management of McCain’s campaign communications, I’d say the biggest obstacle facing the Arizona Senator’s quest for the Oval Office is his own decision, helped by bad advice from his new chief campaign adviser Steve Schmidt, to walk away from the McCain brand.

Schmidt, brought on to “save” McCain’s campaign, advised McCain that its time for him to play the sappy, wounded victim, rather than the confident statesman. Oh Brother! Who think this is a good idea? This new strategy has also been garnished with a new piece of stage management Schmidt has given him: When you have the chance, they have clearly told him, snicker on camera at statements made by Obama. If Obama surrogates say that McCain and Bush statements about “time horizons” sound like Obama’s long-held positions on largely withdrawing from Iraq in 16+ months, or that their moves to prioritize the fighting in Afghanistan sound like positions Obama articulated months ago—-snicker. Laugh it off.

Up until this week, I’d have given McCain an even chance to defeat Obama in November. Obama is charismatic, but has a mighty thin resume. There are enough voters in the U.S. who aren’t sure about voting an African-American into the White House. Add to those people Republicans and people who like to see some gray hair on the President’s head when the *&^%$ hits the fan, and I’d have given McCain a better shot than some national polls.

  9. Is McCain's Age Showing? Tongues Wag Over Flubs

We interrupt the nonstop coverage of Barack Obama's overseas trip to bring you some breaking whispers about John McCain.

He has been making a series of verbal slips -- invariably described as "gaffes" -- that are starting to ricochet from liberal blogs to the mainstream media. And fairly or not, some critics are suggesting the 71-year-old Republican candidate is showing his age.

McCain referred to the "Iraq-Pakistan border" in a "Good Morning America" interview; since there is no such border, he must have meant Afghanistan-Pakistan. He has twice referred to Czechoslovakia, a country that ceased to exist in 1993; mixed up Sunnis and Shiites; band identified Vladimir Putin as president of Germany.

    (WaPo)

Oh dear, no small wonder McCain is in a snit about Germany . . . .

  10. June 4, 2008

Obama staked out some hawkish positions, declaring that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided,"

    June 6, 2008

He refused, however, to rule out other configurations, such as the city also serving as the capital of a Palestinian state or Palestinian sovereignty over Arab neighborhoods.

    July 23, 2008

"It will be impossible to make progress on serious peace talks without putting the future of Jerusalem on the table," Daniel Kurtzer said yesterday at a conference organized by the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute or JPPPI.

Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, has long been recognized by Israeli leaders, including prime ministers, as biased against Israel and is notorious for urging extreme concessions from the Jewish state. He was appointed as a primary Obama adviser on the Middle East earlier this year.

capt - "I guess the brain damaged ex-drug user isn't letting it hold him back, eh?" - at least we agree on who Obama is!! I'm all for the drug-addled trying to get ahead, it's just that his indecision and inability to commit is clinical evidence that the drug use might not have been as short-lived as BHO claimed in his book.

  12. Dan Abrams, the host of MSNBC's "Verdict," told viewers Monday that "gaffe after gaffe after gaffe come from John McCain, and they are forgotten. . . . There is no way Barack Obama would be able to get away with something like this."

Politico catalogued the errors on its Web site yesterday, saying: "McCain's mistakes raise a serious, if uncomfortable question: Are the gaffes the result of his age? And what could that mean in the Oval Office?"

The question is fair, says veteran analyst Charlie Cook of National Journal. "People wonder if McCain is kind of like a pitcher seven or eight years past his prime and misses a few here and there," he says. "When you're about to turn 72, people are going to be watching to see if you're slipping."

  16. Obama is truly the candidate of Change -

    Washington Post – Top 5 Obama Flip-Flops as of February 25, 2008

    1. Special interests

In January, the Obama campaign described union contributions to the campaigns of Clinton and John Edwards as "special interest" money. Obama changed his tune as he began gathering his own union endorsements. He now refers respectfully to unions as the representatives of "working people" and says he is "thrilled" by their support.

    2. Public financing

Obama replied "yes" in September 2007 when asked if he would agree to public financing of the presidential election if his GOP opponent did the same. Obama has now attached several conditions to such an agreement, including regulating spending by outside groups. His spokesman says the candidate never committed himself on the matter.

    3. The Cuba embargo

In January 2004, Obama said it was time "to end the embargo with Cuba" because it had "utterly failed in the effort to overthrow Castro." Speaking to a Cuban American audience in Miami in August 2007, he said he would not "take off the embargo" as president because it is "an important inducement for change."

    4. Illegal immigration

In a March 2004 questionnaire, Obama was asked if the government should "crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants." He replied "Oppose." In a Jan. 31, 2008, televised debate, he said that "we do have to crack down on those employers that are taking advantage of the situation."

    5. Decriminalization of marijuana

While running for the U.S. Senate in January 2004, Obama told Illinois college students that he supported eliminating criminal penalties for marijuana use. In the Oct. 30, 2007, presidential debate, he joined other Democratic candidates in opposing the decriminalization of marijuana.

  17. McSame Outspends Obama 3-1; Gets Nothing for It

In fact, John McCain outspent Barack Obama by a bigger than 3-1 margin ($16 million versus Obama's $5 million) in June--and got next to nothing for his efforts. Nickolas' post shows the Pollster.com trendlines for the states McCain spent so lavishly on. The results for McCain are nothing short of pathetic. Only in Nevada does McCain show any serious uptick, while West Virginia hasn't been polled since June 2nd to make an assessment. As for the rest of the states? It's not even close.

55% want change, even if less experience, vs 40% for stability

Obama has greater risk (55%) vs. McCain (35%).

Obama is more mainstream (60% agree) compared to McCain (45%), but McCain has shared values lead.

43% of McCain supporters see him as the lesser of two evils vs. 22% for Obama.

Thanks, you make my point for me -

GOES TO OBAMA - 51% of voters are focused on what kind of president Obama will be vs. 27% for McCain. THIS IS NOT A QUANTIFICATION - WHAT DOES "FOCUSED" COUNT FOR (i.e FOCUSED + CONCERNED?) -

GOES TO OBAMA - 55% want change, even if less experience, vs 40% for stability - CHANGE FOR CHANGE SAKE?

GOES TO MCCAIN - Obama has greater risk (55%) vs. McCain (35%).

GOES TO MCCAIN - Obama is more mainstream (60% agree) compared to McCain (45%), but McCain has shared values lead. MAINSTREAM IS A TRAIT, NOT A STANCE, SHARED VALUES IS A JUDGEMENT

GOES TO MCCAIN - 43% of McCain supporters see him as the lesser of two evils vs. 22% for Obama. OBAMA = MORE EVIL, GREATER RISK

Tony Blankley (MSNBC) reminds us this is eerily similar to 1980, and Obama is Ronald Reagan... the public wants him but won't commit until late.

Excited to vote for your candidate? 44% to 14% (guess who?)

OBAMA WINS IN THE TRADITIONAL (i.e "Excited")DEM "EMOTIONAL" CATEGORIES, MCCAIN WINS THE QUANTIFIABLE CATEGORIES.

  22. DC,

Following your logic, with Sen. Edwards high on Obama's potential VP list, we may be investigating an immaculate conception! That is, of course, unless Edwards lied last October when questioned about his marital infidelity.

Since infidelity also is against church law, the Obama campaign would owe us the details of this

    To paraphrase your piece -
