When Hillary Didn't "Get the Job Done"

| | Comments (19)

Quick--name an official task that was Hillary Clinton's responsibility last time she was in the White House? The answer is obvious: health care. It was a top priority for the Bill Clinton administration in the first years of his presidency. And he handed the mission to his two-for-the-price-of-one First Lady.

What happened next? We all know: an unmitigated disaster that set the cause of health care reform back for years. Hillary Clinton and her top advisers--in proceedings marked by secrecy and we-know-best arrogance--cooked up a plan that no one could understand. They bent over backward to accommodate the corporate community and miscalculated: Big Business ended up opposing the plan. And the common folks who the plan was supposed to help couldn't comprehend it--which meant they (and their elected representatives) could not fight effectively for it.

Flash forward to 2008. Clinton is fighting for her political life in a fierce battle with Barack Obama. She's pandering on gas prices, she's suggesting that Obama is not ready to be commander in chief, she's pouncing on a remark he made to suggest he's an elitist, she's making a big deal out of his past relationship with a onetime 70s radical, she's accusing him of not being committed to withdrawing from Iraq, she's pushing reporters to dwell upon Obama's friendship with a developer indicted on corruption charges, she's pondering how to game the delegate system. And her latest ad in North Carolina, which holds an important primary on Tuesday, she repeats her claim that she is the candidate who can make change happen.

In the ad, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley, a Clinton supporter, says:

These are tough times in America and I think that Hillary is the one we can count on to get the job done. She's going to turn the economy around, she's going bring new jobs, she's going to get some tax cuts for the middle class for a change. She's going to make health care available to everybody in this country, and she's going to do everything she can to help every child reach their full potential. She is so resilient, so determined. She knows how to deliver.

To which anyone with a skeptical view (and a memory) might say, "Hillarycare." Sure, she's racked up a few accomplishments as a senator. But she failed miserably on the biggest task she has ever assumed. She didn't get that job done; she botched it. True, it was a tough assignment, and the odds were against her. But if she's making promises now, her first attempt to "make health care available to everybody in this country" is relevant. (More relevant than the issue of her laugh.) Well, maybe she can get the job done on the second time around. Older and wiser, and all that. But her early-90s failure was one reason why health care disappeared as a political issue for so long. That's a reality that present-day campaign rhetoric can be measured against.

  1. Good thing she is not the nominee.

  2. If Hillary wins the nomination, Independents and moderate Republicans will decide the next presidential election. If Obama wins the nomination, Democrats will decide the next presidential election. Either way, conservative Republicans can vote or stay home, it won't affect the outcome. Thank you George Bush, dead man walking. And how about that brainchild McCain and his great campaign strategy: four more years! Four more years, yea that's a winner.

  3. We need to stay in Iraq until they stop killing us, then we can stay in Iraq.

I don't think that will sell as a "plan" - If we bring the troops home it wll mean those troops are not killed so . . .

Add saving $12 billion a month we have to borrow and the advantages are clear.

Thank you. Thank you all very much. Admiral Kelly, Captain Card (ph), officers and sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans, major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.

I saw this today, and HAD to share it with everyone. It is just a brilliantly researched and written list of inconsistencies with several of Obama's stories. I think it should be done for ALL three candidates, but I guess this is a good way to start at finally looking at the candidates with some honesty.

  8. When Barack first entered the public arena, he said We all pray to an awesome God! That we are not red states or blue states but the United States... and that is his simple message and goal, to unite Americans. With nothing to gain, Barack said this at the Democratic National Convention for Kerry when he reached out to all Americans -- not just the Democrats! However, they have tried to skew it by stating he does not even pray to the flag, he's a Muslim -- and going forward they (the forces of Materialism and Corprate Greed) will do all they can to confuse us, but if you go back to your first introduction of Barack, at the Democratic Convention, you will realize that that is who he really is!

Only the Republican-controlled Media and Team Clinton want to keep us blindsided by Rev. Wright controversy because it divides us as Americans and does not unite us. The Republicans do not want us united, to find our Powerbase, which would be to their demise. The Clintons because it fuels a racial divide although when they were facing Bills's Impeachment, they called Rev. Wright to the White House for prayer and support. We must not let them blindside or brainwash us again and take us down a path like the Iraq war... there are WMD's -- Iraqi oil will pay for the war and yet our gas prices have never been so high -- economy is good, and a host of misleading statements, sniper fire included. We have a man in Barack who is aunthentic, honest, who truly sees a way for us to be united and to work on our common goals... He is not an elitist, that is another attempt to blindside us and divide us!

Mike Huckabee was right-on in his recent comments regarding Rev. Wright and his need to stay bitter to justify his anger against some people in America, an anger and bitterness that Barack does not share.

  9. The hilarious moment Hillary Clinton tried to make her OWN coffee

You might think Hillary Clinton's toughest challenge would be battling Barack Obama in their increasingly hard-fought race for the White House.

For weeks she has faced calls from senior Democrats asking her to give up fighting the young Illinois senator who is leading the contest.

But while visiting a petrol station in Indiana - ahead of Tuesday's state primary - the pampered former First Lady threw in the towel after failing to work a coffee machine.

Moments after admitting she hadn't visited a forecourt or used a fuel pump in years, Mrs Clinton begged the kiosk manager to help her pour a cup of the French Vanilla brew that she craved.

Yesterday's publicity stunt in the town of South Bend is one she will soon want to forget.

HRC and McSame have lived a sheltered five star life for decades. Juxtapose that with Barack's grandmother that lives in a hut.

    Barack is the elitist?

McSame and HRC are the real campions of the little guy and the gas tax is not a pander it is suppose to be policy when Bush is still president? They are talking about THIS summer?

The M$M is doing their job. . . (to distract and deceive)

  10. I think it has come down to a question of "we" versus "me" ideology.

HRC and McSame are the "me" candidates, everything is about what they will do while Barack is the "we" candidate, everything is about what we have to do.

    Seems honest and simple.

Bush has made Americans lose faith in our country. We can't answer honest questions from other parts of the world. We have become torturers and warmongers, arrogant and superior.

We need to find the country again and it has to be found one person at a time not by way of some edict from on high.

"And so, my fellow americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."

  11. McCain Proclaimed "Massive Victory" in Iraq and Credited Combat-Readiness for "Our Victory" in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom demonstrated to the world what we saw just 12 years ago. We went to war as the most combat-ready force in the world. The value of that readiness is clear. We won a massive victory in a few weeks, and we did so with very limited loss of American and allied lives. We were able to end aggression with minimum overall loss of life, and we were even able to greatly reduce the civilian casualties of Afghani and Iraqi citizens. . . . Our technology edge in Afghanistan and Iraq would have been meaningless if we did not have men and women trained to use it. Having the best weapons system platforms in the world would not have given us our victory if we had not had the right command and control facilities, maintenance capabilities, and munitions." [Congressional Record, 5/22/03]

White House Advocated Long Term Troops Presence in Iraq Like South Korean Model. "President Bush envisions a long-term U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to the one in South Korea where American forces have helped keep an uneasy peace for more than 50 years, the White House said Wednesday." [Associated Press, 5/31/07]

2008: McCain Said US May Stay In Iraq For 100 Years. At a New Hampshire town hall when McCain was asked "President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years." McCain responded: "Maybe 100." [McCain Town Hall, Derry NH Opera House 1/3/2008]

  12. The thing about Hillary and her '90s health care plan is that she wasn't interested in selling it, any more than she was originally interested in selling any policies earlier in this campaign. Rather than make it a policy issue, she made it a personal issue - if you're against health care, you're against Hillary! It was all about Hillary, and from her perspective of course the plan was going to be passed because she SAID it was going to be passed, and what Hillary wants Hillary gets. I remember her being flat-out stunned that there was any opposition - and it's in no small part due to her egocentric delivery of a health care plan and how the Republicans crushed it that the whole Clinton administration spent much of its existence with a Republican-dominated Congress. It's not surprising that she tried bulldozing her campaign this year through the same way; it's not really about the Presidency, it's about Hillary!

  14. How superdelegates can break up with Hillary

Politico is reporting that, according to insiders, most of the more than 80 uncommitted superdelegates in the House and Senate have already made up their minds for Obama. Why don't they just come out with it and end our long, national nightmare? As Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill said, "They would like someone else to act for them before they talk about it in the cold light of day."

And you can't blame them. Would you want Bill Clinton screaming outside your house in the middle of the night, pissing on your front lawn, and then letting the air out of your tires?

Still, they're going to have to break the news to Hillary at some point. The question is, how? Our suggestions for a few ways superdelegates can break it to Hillary that they're going with Hope over Experience:

  15. US officials: Decision On Confronting Iran Up To Iraq

    By The Associated Press

01/05/08 "AP" -- - WASHINGTON -- Iraqi leaders have been given the latest U.S. evidence of Iranian support for militias inside Iraq, and Baghdad will decide what to do about it, two senior Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

Marine Lt. Gen. John Sattler, director of strategy, plans and policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki possesses the evidence, which other officials said contradicts Tehran's stated commitment to stop providing arms, weapons technology and training to Shiite militias inside Iraq.

So it is not our president, not our joint chiefs, not our generals but the puppet government in Iraq that will decide if America attacks Iran.

Wow, this is not American leadership.

  16. Sidney Blumenthal Uses Former Right-Wing Foes To Attack Obama

    [...]

Almost every day over the past six months, I have been the recipient of an email that attacks Obama's character, political views, electability, and real or manufactured associations. The original source of many of these hit pieces are virulent and sometimes extreme right-wing websites, bloggers, and publications. But they aren't being emailed out from some fringe right-wing group that somehow managed to get my email address. Instead, it is Sidney Blumenthal who, on a regular basis, methodically dispatches these email mudballs to an influential list of opinion shapers -- including journalists, former Clinton administration officials, academics, policy entrepreneurs, and think tankers -- in what is an obvious attempt to create an echo chamber that reverberates among talk shows, columnists, and Democratic Party funders and activists. One of the recipients of the Blumenthal email blast, himself a Clinton supporter, forwards the material to me and perhaps to others.

These attacks sent out by Blumenthal, long known for his fierce and combative loyalty to the Clintons, draw on a wide variety of sources to spread his Obama-bashing. Some of the pieces are culled from the mainstream media and include some reasoned swipes at Obama's policy and political positions.

Paul was committed at the tender age of 17 because my parents insurance ran out after one year of care. They told them that if they didn't do commit my brother, it could lead to bankruptcy. This was 32 years ago! Nothing has changed.
