Where's the apology?
Politico reports that in his new book, former Bush White House press secretary Scott McClellan says that Bush was not "open and forthright on Iraq," adopted a "permanent campaign approach" when it came to governing, and used "propaganda" to sell the war. He also writes that Scooter Libby and Karl Rove "had at best misled" him about their role in the leak that disclosed the CIA identity of Valerie Plame Wilson and that he (McClellan) had presented information to the White House press corps that was "badly misguided." McClellan notes that Bush "and his advisers confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then sustain public support during a time of war."
Now McClellan says the media was not tough enough on Bush: "If anything, the national press corps was probably too deferential to the White House and to the administration in regard to the most important decision facing the nation during my years in Washington, the choice over whether to go to war in Iraq. The collapse of the administration's rationales for war, which became apparent months after our invasion, should never have come as such a surprise....In this case, the 'liberal media' didn't live up to its reputation. If it had, the country would have been better served."
Excuse me for getting a bit huffy. But when it counted there were a few of us in the media who were indeed arguing that the Bush White House was setting new records in presidential deception--especially when it came to Iraq. McClellan, though, was part of the White House's defense team, pushing back against media coverage that questioned Bush's rationale for the war and Bush's serial abuse of facts. Apparently McClellan has seen the light. Well, where's his plea for forgiveness? If he were truly contrite about his involvement in a deceptive, propaganda-wielding administration, McClellan could demonstrate his sincerity by pledging that all profits from his belated truth-telling will go to charities supporting the families of American soldiers killed or injured in Iraq. For history's sake, it is good that McClellan is confirming what most Americans (according to polls) have long known: the Bush administration trampled the truth to win public backing for the Iraq war. But as an enabler (witting or not) of that process, McClellan owes the public more than a for-sale account. He should not profit from this book, making bucks for correcting war-supporting falsehoods that he defended. He ought to be doing penance. True heart-felt confessions come free.

Scott McClellan was the front man for journalistic push back. When he concludes Bush's war was enabled by propaganda just who does he think defended the propaganda and executed the journalistic push back without relent?
I hope Bush slimes and trashes Scotty as he slimed ever other senior White House Official that left before the end. Scotty can't be expecting a job with the Carlyle Group but he would be a good candidate for any organization that wanted a front man who'd defend his boss' interests to the end, well, almost. Isn't he shooting himself in the foot with this attack?

Maybe McClellan's revelations will fuel renewed interest in both investigating further and prosecuting the thugs by whom Bush was surrounded and protected in this, the most dishonest, criminal, incompetent administration ever. (Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan partisans need not worry any longer about their guys vying for last place in the presidential galaxy.)
Appointed by a Republican Supreme Court (by way of a tortuous and fatuous interpretation of the 14th Amendment) to his first term and elected by 50.6% of the vote in 2004 (a "mandate," crowed Bush and Rove) following the tainted results in Ohio, it's about time these mendacious cynics are called to account.

So how are all the families who have lost sons and daughters in this war suppose to process this information in the book? That their relatives died in vain? What good does it do to write a tell all book when we're still in the midst of a war?

McCain Adviser Phil Gramm Shaped McCain’s Economic Policy While Lobbying For Foreign Bank
While Gramm was advising McCain, he was paid by UBS to lobby the Senate about the mortgage crisis, strongly opposing increased government regulation and several consumer protection bills, which, as Keith Olbermann noted, “might have mitigated the current crisis”:
As recently as December 31 of last year, still working for Swiss bankers, specifically to help kill the Emergency Home Ownership And Mortgage Equity Protection Act and the Helping Families Save Their Homes and Bankruptcy Act, a bill that would have let bankruptcy judges adjust mortgages terms so American families facing foreclosure could repay their loans and keep their homes. […]
Gramm’s deregulation [as a senator] help set the stage for an explosion of banks slicing up subprime mortgages, bundling them with other mortgage slices, to hide the credit risks, and stelling mortgage stew to other investment firms. That gave lenders powerful incentive to make as many loans as possible, regardless of risk.

McCain Gaffe Alert: Iran
It is looking increasingly like John McCain really knows nothing about Iran, despite wanting to bomb them.
Yesterday, in his big non-proliferation speech, McCain took his gaffes to a new level. He actually invented 20 years of negotiations between the United States and Tehran. In his speech, McCain said:
"Today, some people seem to think they've discovered a brand new cause, something no one before them ever thought of. Many believe all we need to do to end the nuclear programs of hostile governments is have our president talk with leaders in Pyongyang and Tehran, as if we haven't tried talking to these governments repeatedly over the past two decades."
McCain has clearly forgotten what Max Bergmann points out: The stated policy of the United States since April 7, 1980 has been that we don't talk to the Iranians. Never has the United States had communications, or tried to have communications, with the Iranian government on their nuclear program. Iran's nuclear communications have been limited to working through the European Union (led by France and Germany, countries John McCain has referred to as "vacuous" and "posturing").

ADD:
Taken with his other many gaffes on Iran (repeated Sunni/Shia screw up, the use of Khamenei and Ahmajinedad interchangeably) there should be real questions about whether McCain has any knowledge of US-Iranian relations. Given that this one was in his prepared text, it also makes you wonder what his foreign policy team actually knows about Iran. For a man running for President on his foreign policy aptitude such confusion should sound alarm bells.
So to review John McCain's policy toward Iran:
1) He thinks that there is no difference between Sunni and Shia.
2) He thinks that Khumeni and Amajenadad are the same.
3) He thinks we've been talking to them for 20 years.
4) He thinks we should "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran."
Three of his stated beliefs are simply false. The fourth is simply reckless and is a clear display that John McCain is more extreme than Bush on the issue conservatives would like you to believe is the biggest threat facing America today.

Another... MAJOR FOREIGN POLICY GAFFE By Obama Campaign (Iran & WTO)
Gateway Pundit ^ | 5-28-08 |
Another... MAJOR FOREIGN POLICY GAFFE By Obama Campaign
Barack Obama Is Going to Open New Channels Of Diplomacy With Iran
Barack Obama believes that:
"We have not exhausted our non-military options in confronting the Iranian threat; in many ways, we have yet to try them.
Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions. Now is the time to pressure Iran directly to change their troubling behavior. Obama would offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization. "
Barack Obama- Is ready to offer the Iranian Regime membership into the World Trade Organization:
But, Oops!... There appears to be a problem with this plan.
Amir Taheri at The Wall Street Journal has some critical information that was missed by Obama's staff of foreign policy advisors:
As a nation, Iranians are among the few in the world that still like the U.S. As a revolution, however, Iran is the principal bastion of anti-Americanism. Last month, Tehran hosted an international conference titled "A World Without America." Indeed, since the election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005, Iran has returned to a more acute state of revolutionary hysteria. Mr. Ahmadinejad seems to truly believe the "Hidden Imam" is coming to conquer the world for his brand of Islam. He does not appear to be interested in the kind of "carrots" that Secretary Rice was offering two years ago and Mr. Obama is hinting at today.
Mr. Ahmadinejad is talking about changing the destiny of mankind, while Mr. Obama and his foreign policy experts offer spare parts for Boeings or membership in the World Trade Organization. Perhaps Mr. Obama is unaware that one of Mr. Ahmadinejad's first acts was to freeze Tehran's efforts for securing WTO membership because he regards the outfit as "a nest of conspiracies by Zionists and Americans."
It doesn't look like the Iranian Regime will be much interested in the Obama Campaign's incentive of membership in the WTO...
Since they just walked away from the organization 3 years ago.
...Unless, of course, Obama can clean out all the "nest of Zionists and Americans" on staff first.
Maybe that's part of the plan?

Three superdelegates have come out to day endorsing Barack Obama: Pat Waak from Colorado, Meredith Wood Smith from Oregon and Ben Pangelinan from Guam.
[Waak]
Second, I believe that Sen. Obama and his message of change is what Colorado wants and that he will defeat John McCain in November. In fact, the most recent Rasmussen poll on May 19, 2008 shows a Sen. Obama with a 6-point lead in a head-to-head race and I think that margin will only increase as voters see the clear difference.
Finally, I believe that our country needs the type of visionary, uplifting leadership that Senator Obama has shown during this long campaign. In the state of Colorado his message of hope has attracted young people, new Democrats and Independent voters who will make up a winning coalition this fall.

Why Obama? Because he received the majority of the votes in the Oregon primary, and he demonstrates the leadership needed to get us out of Iraq, restore our economy, begin the tough job of providing health care for all Americans and, most of all, heal the divisions in our nation. His commitment to grass-roots organizing, similar to Howard Dean's "Fifty State Strategy," will help Democrats win our down-ticket races. His deep understanding of our Constitution ensures that he will appoint judges, to both the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, who will truly defend our constitutional rights and freedoms.

In speaking to members of both teams, I have come to trust in Senator Obama's commitment to turning the promises on the issues that are important to the people of Guam, into progress for the people of Guam."

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL), a key Bush antagonist and member of the House Judiciary Committee, says McClellan needs to tell Congress the full story about potential White House conspiring around the leak of a CIA officer's name and propaganda efforts that preceded the invasion of Iraq.
Wexler released a statement Wednesday calling for McClellan to tesitfy under oath before the Judiciary committee.
“The admissions made by Scott McClellan in his new book are earth-shattering and allege facts to establish that Karl Rove and Scooter Libby – and possibly Vice President Cheney - conspired to obstruct justice by lying about their role in the Plame Wilson matter and that the Bush Administration deliberately lied to the American people in order to take us to war in Iraq," Wexler said. "Scott McClellan must now appear before the House Judiciary Committee under oath to tell Congress and the American people how President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, and White House officials deliberately orchestrated a massive propaganda campaign to sell the war in Iraq to the American people.
“The allegations by this former top White House aide – that Rove and Libby deliberately coordinated their stories in order to obstruct justice in the Plame case, that the President deliberately disregarded contradictory evidence related to Iraq, should outrage every American and Congress must respond by initiating immediate aggressive oversight starting with an appearance by McClellan before the House Judiciary Committee," he continued. "Any continued obstruction by this Administration to prevent White House officials from appearing before Congress cannot be tolerated by this Congress in the face of these shocking revelations.”

Swing State Polls Give Hillary Last-Minute Boost
May 28, 2008 05:56 PM
A Gallup Poll released on May 28 gave a last-minute boost to the central claim of the Hillary Clinton campaign that she would make a stronger general election candidate than Barack Obama against John McCain, prevailing in swing states that have twice as many votes as those in which Obama trounces her.
In a conference call for reporters, Howard Wolfson, Clinton's strategist and communications director, read key paragraphs from the Gallup report entitled "Hillary Clinton's Swing-State Advantage"
The Gallup report found:
"In the 20 states where Hillary Clinton has claimed victory in the 2008 Democratic primary and caucus elections (winning the popular vote), she has led John McCain in Gallup Poll Daily trial heats for the general election over the past two weeks of Gallup Poll Daily tracking by 50% to 43%. In those same states, Barack Obama is about tied with McCain among national registered voters, 45% to 46%.
"In contrast, in the 28 states and the District of Columbia where Obama has won a higher share of the popular vote against Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primaries and caucuses, there is essentially no difference in how Obama and Clinton each fare against McCain. Both Democrats are statistically tied with him for the fall election."
The Gallup findings were music to Wolfson's ears, so much so that he reread the first graph aloud to make sure it sank in.

BREAKING: Sen. John McCain Resigns from the McCain Campaign
Cindy McCain the likely replacement.
In a surprising development, Sen. John McCain asked himself to resign from his own campaign today. Sen. McCain said today,
I had much respect for John McCain. I really thought he would make a good candidate. Then the guy turned out to be a flake. My friends, when I made a solemn promise to the American people that there will be zero tolerance for incompetence in my campaign, I meant it. Then I took a look at my own voting history and at the appointments I made to my campaign. Listening to Phil Gramm's economic advice while he was a paid lobbyist for a Swiss Bank was a dumb thing to do. I thought I had left behind the Keating Five days, but apparently not. So, with regret, I have asked myself to submit my resignation. The search for a replacement will be led by my trusted advisor Charlie Black.
After renouncing and rejecting two pastors and several lobbyists in his staff, there was no one left to blame for his campaign's problems. To keep his `Straight Talk' image McCain was left with no choice but to fire himself.

From NBC's Mark Hudspeth and Domenico Montanaro
The Obama campaign decided to weigh in on the McClellan book. The campaign uses it as another reason to pivot to McCain on foreign policy and to link Bush and the presumptive Republican nominee.
"It's not news that this Administration engaged in spin and deception to lead us into a war that should've never been authorized and never been waged, the only question now is, do we continue George Bush's failed policy in Iraq or do we change it?" Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan said in a statement. "John McCain is promising four more years of the exact same policy in Iraq that asks everything of our brave troops and nothing of the Iraqi government, while Barack Obama wants to begin a phased withdrawal of our troops and refocus our efforts on going after al-Qaeda in Afghanistan."
*** UPDATE ***
NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger reports Bill Clinton said of the book, "I haven’t seen it. I haven’t seen it, but I think, from what I read, it seems to confirm what Joe Wilson has always said about his own experience. And it shows all the more why it’s important that we change the direction of the country and pick the best president. "

Wasserman-Schultz on arresting Rove: ‘Well, if that’s what it takes.’
In an interview with MSNBC’s Dan Abrams yesterday, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL) said that the House Judiciary Committee would be willing to arrest Karl Rove if he continues to refuse to testify about his role in the U.S. attorney scandal and prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. The Hill reports:
“Well, if that’s what it takes,” she said. “I mean we really cannot allow the co-equal branch of government, the legislative branch, to be trampled upon by the executive branch. The founding fathers established three branches of government. We are a co-equal branch, and this is an administration that essentially has ignored and disrespected the role of the legislative branch for far too long.”

Another rookie move by Obummer Jr.
First off, McClellan was on Bill Mauer less than a year ago defending the Iraqi war.
Second, this has nothing to do with current status of Iraq.
Third, Obummer would rather meet with Iran than our troops. He's afraid to go to Bagdad with McCain cuz he knows McCain would look more Presidential and he would have to admit that the surge is working.

Scott McClellan says Bush relied on "propaganda" instead of fact to mislead the American public about his failed Iraq war.

Those people who believe all problems have solutions may be unfamiliar with the inner workings of the Democratic Party.
On Saturday, the party’s Rules and Bylaws Committee will try to solve a big problem, in order to avoid a huge problem in order to prevent a train wreck.
The big problem is what to do about Michigan and Florida, two states stripped last year of their delegates to the Democratic National Convention because both broke party rules and moved their primaries up too early in the election year.

Will smoking past affect Obama’s health?
By JEFF STIER | 5/28/08 10:52 AM EST Text Size:
Now that John McCain has finally released his medical records, the issue of candidates' health should be put to rest, right?
Not so fast. Barack Obama’s campaign has said at least some of his medical records would be released next week, and if complete, they may reveal some valuable information.
Some of his records? What's he hiding?
While voters should pick their candidate based on the issues, we have a right to know of any lurking health issues. Obama is young, active and looks great. But he has a documented history as a cigarette smoker. Not many people realize that even as a former smoker, he faces significantly increased risks of smoking-related diseases. These risks did not simply disappear when he quit smoking in February 2007. (Let me be clear, this is not an appeal to puritanical values — nor an endorsement of a candidate. This is about the long-term and sometimes irreversible consequences of smoking cigarettes.)
Yes, Obama claims to have quit — and by doing so, he did reduce his risk of smoking-related disease. But the science tells us that it is naive to think that quitting after years of smoking returns you to the state of health of a never-smoker. In fact, after enough smoking, some health effects are irreversible. How long and how much one smokes determines the extent of health risk after quitting.
More than half of all lung cancers are diagnosed in ex-smokers. And it's not just lung cancer. Ex-smokers face long term risks for pancreatic, esophageal, bladder, and kidney cancers, to name a few.
A 1998 study reported that the amount of fatty deposits in the carotid artery depended on total pack-years of tobacco exposure in a lifetime, not whether a patient currently smokes. A smoker's excess risk of a stroke doesn't return to that of nonsmokers until at least five, or as long as 20, years after quitting. It is possible that Obama would have to serve a hypothetical four smoke-free terms before his stroke risk returned to normal.
So how long and how much did Obama smoke? The campaign refuses to say, but we know he smoked a lot over his life. Based on accounts of his friends, we know he was smoking by the time he was a freshman at Occidental College three decades ago. He admits to having smoked up to ten cigarettes a day, but he said he usually smoked closer to four or five daily.
Most people underestimate how much they smoke, but let's take him at his word. Let's also assume he really did quit when he said he did, although he admits to having fallen off the wagon on occasion.
So he smoked for at least a quarter-century. That's more than 50,000 cigarettes — and maybe as many as 70,000.
Just because he's young, looks great and exercises doesn't mean he's completely healthy. And given what an important figure he is, to ignore his smoking history is to miss an educational opportunity.

Obummer has exposed his children to second hand smoke which can be worse than first hand smoke. What a lousy parent. I bet Pansy also smokes in front of his kids while sippin margaritas and ignoring them.

Then again if I were a member of Hagees doom and gloom Rapture Ready crowd like Pansy, I'd problably be a smoker and drinker also.

John McCain and George Bush believe the same things on virtually every issue - the list of their agreements goes on for pages. But a better judge of a politician’s views is not how he talks, but how he votes. John McCain - when it counted and when he showed up in the Senate to do his job in 2008 - never deviated from George Bush’s position. Not once. 100%.
It’s all there in black and white. John McSame - just like Bush.

Landmark cluster bomb ban agreed by 111 countries

'But crucially, the United States, Russia, China, India, Israel and Pakistan -- all major producers and stockpilers of cluster bombs -- were absent from the Dublin talks, and thus not part of the agreement."

"Where's the apology?"
Since it's all bullshit, à la little lying Ricky Clarke, and meant to earn him bucks from the nutrooters, why is there a need for an apology? ... But maybe you'll get one after you apologize for repeating little lying Joey's claim that the perjurer Plame was "covert", eh? ;-)

This book reveals Scott is merely following a family tradition of political opportunism. His mother, Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn, held and ran for various local and state offices in Texas as a Democrat, Republican, and Independent. Core principles like fidelity, honesty, and truth are lacking in his gene pool.

gimme a break.
you want to see a shifting paradigm? how 'bout liberals pretending that the whole world didn't think that saddam was rebuilding his weapons program. now, with 20-20 hindsight, we are asked to pretend that it was, in fact, the GRAND LIE.
