Should Dems Pick a Nominee Dems Consider Nasty and Dishonest?

| | Comments (50)

During a conference call on Wednesday morning, David Plouffe, the campaign manager for Barack Obama, pointed to what he called a "warning sign" for Democrats: the exit polls from Mississippi, where Obama on Tuesday beat Hillary Clinton 61 to 37 percent. Plouffe noted that when Democratic voters who participated in this primary were asked "which candidate do you think is honest and trustworthy," 50 percent said Clinton was not. Seventy percent of the Democrats polled said Obama was honest and trustworthy. That's a 20-point integrity gap--and its among Democrats. Certainly, many Democrats elsewhere--such as in states where Clinton won big--do not share this distrust of Clinton. But Plouffe is right: numbers like these ought to give Democrats, be they voters or super-delegates, pause.

Another interesting factoid from the exit polls: who's the more vicious candidate. The exit pollsters asked Democrats in Mississippi if either Obama or Clinton has attacked "the other unfairly." Sixty-one percent said that Clinton has; 39 percent said that Obama has. So in addition to the integrity gap, there was a 22-point nasty gap. Again, Democratic voters in states that went for Clinton may not see this the same way. And given that the Mississippi Democratic electorate included many African Americans, this number may reflect a sentiment held more by black Democrats than white Democrats. (Remember South Carolina?) Nevertheless, all this is food for thought for Democrats: do they want a presidential candidate that many voters within their own ranks consider unfair and not honest?

For more of a breakdown of the Mississippi vote--particularly the racial component (short answer: Clinton won whites; Obama won blacks)--see my colleague Jonathan Stein's posting at MotherJones.com.

  2. A Hllary supporter I spoke with at the caucus said she likes BHO but was afraid he is too nice like Carter and wouldn't get things done. She flat out said she wanted a nasty candidate to twist arms and fight dirty. There was no desire to change the political tone, just be on the winning side of the status quo. I suspect many other HRC supporters feel the same way.

  4. Dishonest, no. That is an objectively unfair and unreasonalbe. Americans have had enough of alternate universe Bush Adminsitration and have no stomach for Gramps McBush and his flip-floppery (and the extension of Mr. 20%'s policies.

Nastiness is a relative term. Respect and civility are earned. I think LBH could learn from that dictum. A president that unites the nation will always accomplish more than one who divides us into subgroups and partisan interests.

That said, when Roadblock Republicans won't let the needs of Americans be met by blocking every piece of legislation that comes down the pike. Force becomes necessary. Nastiness is necessary when they are harming the interests of the American people.

No doubt but that would require a spine.

For a moment, it looked like party leaders were marching toward a Florida revote. But Obama's campaign signaled today that the mechanics would be an obstacle, and Florida's congressional delegation just took a hard line against a re-vote in a joint statement:

Washington, DC – The Members of Florida’s Democratic Delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives issued the following statement regarding the seating of Florida’s delegates at the DNC National Convention this August.

“We are committed to working with the DNC, the Florida State Democratic party, our Democratic leaders in Florida, and our two candidates to reach an expedited solution that ensures our 210 delegates are seated.

“Our House delegation is opposed to a mail-in campaign or any redo of any kind.”

The Democratic Congress's 2008 Budget: A Tax and Spending Spree

    by Brian M. Riedl

In January, a Democratic congressional majority was sworn in that was elected in part by promising fiscal responsibility. The Democrats specifically pledged to limit spending increases and employ pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) budgeting to keep the budget deficit in check.

As their first year moves toward a close, it has become clear that the members of this majority have failed to live up to their promises. In just 10 months, Congress has passed legislation that would increase federal spending by a combined $454 billion over 10 years and raise taxes and fees by $98 billion over 10 years and has passed a budget resolution that would bring the tax increase to a projected $2.7 trillion.[1]

Despite the Democrats' PAYGO pledge of no new deficit spending, legislation enacted thus far has increased spending much faster than taxes, resulting in an additional $356 billion in deficit spending. Only their budget blueprint, which assumes repeal of nearly all of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, would pay for all of their new spending.

    Tax Increases

[W]e include no assumption of a tax increase.

--Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND), March 20, 2007.[2]

Fact: Congress's budget assumes trillions of dollars more in tax revenues than would be collected under current tax policies. Congress has already passed more than $98 billion in tax increases, and more have been proposed.

Pledges to increase taxes were generally absent from the 2006 congressional races. There was little reason to call for tax increases. Following the largest three-year revenue surge in 40 years, tax revenues stand at 18.8 percent of GDP--well above the historical average.[3] The budget deficit persists only because spending has jumped 26 percent (adjusted for inflation) since 2001. Furthermore, strong growth in jobs, the stock market, and the economy in general began immediately following the 2003 tax cuts.[4] Not surprisingly, the public has little appetite for tax increases.

Despite relative silence with respect to taxes on the campaign trail, the Democratic congressional majority quickly enacted a budget resolution calling for one of the largest tax increases in history. Under current tax rates, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects $14.107 trillion in tax revenue between 2008 and 2012. Yet the congressional budget resolution calls for collecting $14.828 trillion-- an increase of $721 billion.

    Chavez's Blustered Diversion

    New York Sun ^ | March 12, 2008 | Jaime Daremblum

President Chavez tried hard to start a war, or at least look like he wanted to start a war. His excuse, of course, was the raid on Colombian rebels by Colombian troops — on Ecuadorian soil. What all this had to do with Venezuela might not have been clear to outsiders, but Mr. Chavez knew what he was doing. His posturing was strategic, designed to deflect public attention from the increasingly evident failures of his regime. He desperately needed something big to distract disaffected Venezuelans from his failures, and a skirmish with Colombia might have done the trick.

Creating an external conflict to distract attention from internal trouble is a favorite trick of every strongman. Think of Argentina's General Leopoldo Galtieri who instigated war with Great Britain over the Falkland Islands in an effort to draw attention away from his military junta's disastrous policies.

Mr. Chavez hoped that stirring up trouble with Colombia would serve a similar end and divert Venezuelans' attention from the breakdown of his "Bolivarian Revolution." For Mr. Chavez, it didn't matter that the leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Raul Reyes, was killed in Ecuador, not Venezuela; the killing was a useful pretext for diversionary blustering and threats.

Leave aside the fact that information found on Reyes's laptop confirms that Mr. Chavez is a sponsor of FARC, the terrorist group that has been waging an "insurgency" in Colombia since the 1960s. ...

  12. David Mamet: Why I Am No Longer a 'Brain-Dead Liberal
    '
    An election-season essay
by David Mamet/ The Village Voice
    March 11th, 2008 12:00 AM

I took the liberal view for many decades, but I believe I have changed my mind.

As a child of the '60s, I accepted as an article of faith that government is corrupt, that business is exploitative, and that people are generally good at heart.

These cherished precepts had, over the years, become ingrained as increasingly impracticable prejudices. Why do I say impracticable? Because although I still held these beliefs, I no longer applied them in my life. How do I know? My wife informed me. We were riding along and listening to NPR. I felt my facial muscles tightening, and the words beginning to form in my mind: Shut the fuck up. "?" she prompted. And her terse, elegant summation, as always, awakened me to a deeper truth: I had been listening to NPR and reading various organs of national opinion for years, wonder and rage contending for pride of place. Further: I found I had been—rather charmingly, I thought—referring to myself for years as "a brain-dead liberal," and to NPR as "National Palestinian Radio."

This is, to me, the synthesis of this worldview with which I now found myself disenchanted: that everything is always wrong.

But in my life, a brief review revealed, everything was not always wrong, and neither was nor is always wrong in the community in which I live, or in my country. Further, it was not always wrong in previous communities in which I lived, and among the various and mobile classes of which I was at various times a part.

  13. Obama: Issues, Not Race, Will Prevail

    […]

Obama said some voters might favor or disfavor him because he is black, just as some might favor or disfavor Clinton because she is female.

However, he said, "the overwhelming majority of Americans are going to make these decisions based on who they think will be the best president. I have absolute confidence that if I'm doing my job, if I'm delivering my message, then there are very few voters out there that I can't win."

"If I'm not winning them over," he said, "then it's my fault."

    *****

People can say what they will - this guy is saying the right things. How refreshing to hear a politician (however flawed) rise above, be honest and take responsibility for his actions.

He sure seems more the real deal than any candidate I have heard from in many years - if ever.

He married little miss homewrecker in May of 1980. He cheated on his wife plenty. Again, that just makes him a shitty husband, not a bad politician.

Go back and read those posts I linked. What did you say back then (when the Reds were in power in Congress)? Nothing. Not. A. Peep.

  28. Federal Budget Deficit Swells on Record Spending

    Wednesday, March 12, 2008 1:11 PM

WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department says the federal deficit swelled to $263.3 billion in the first five months of this budget year as record spending during the period outpaced record revenues.

The department's latest snapshot of the government's balance sheets, released Wednesday, shows that the deficit for the budget year that began Oct. 1 was up a whopping 62 percent from the red ink of $162.2 billion for the corresponding five-month period last year.

The latest year-to-date budget deficit of $263.3 billion was an all-time high, the government said.

Spending totaled a record $1.23 trillion, while revenues totaled $967.2 billion, also an all-time high.

For the month of February alone, the government ran a deficit of $175.6 billion, a record for any single month. That was larger than the shortfall of around $170 billion that economists were expecting.

"The big story this week is the Democrats. Hillary got her groove back. I don't know if you saw this but on Tuesday there were four primaries and she beat the Arab guy three to one. I only know what I see in the paper. And she did it the old fashioned way, by building a coalition of women, Latinos and blue-collar white men, and scaring the shit out of them."
    --Bill Maher

"Apparently negative is the new positive. Now the media is trying to goad Barack Obama into taking the gloves off. And I'm not so sure this strategy is any good, you know, having a young black man attack a 60-year-old white lady? She loves to play the victim. She's already got a new slogan, 'Hillary Clinton: Please, just take my purse and leave me alone.'"
    --Bill Maher

"But it's interesting, this race is so even that each side could make the case that they should be the nominee, and neither one of them is going anywhere. Which, I think it's a bad sign for the country, when the Democratic campaign is predicted to last longer than the Republican nominee."
    --Bill Maher

"Hillary's been going around saying, 'I've been tested.' John McCain also said, 'I've been tested, and luckily the tests came back negative... knock on wood.'"
    --Bill Maher

"But congratulations to John McCain, he wrapped up the Republican nomination this week. And we know this is official now because Mike Huckabee dropped out and said he was joining forces with John McCain. Oh, great, you've got one guy who doesn't believe in evolution, and another guy who remembers it."
    --Bill Maher

"Also eliminated last night, Congressman Ron Paul, of Texas, says he's winding down his presidential campaign. His supporter is devastated. Ron says he's looking forward, though, to spending more time with his wife Mrs. Paul, and her delicious pre-packaged seafood products."
    --Jimmy Kimmel

"Here's some great news, today they found the source of all global warming in America -- New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's pants."
    --Jay Leno

"So you gotta be fair. It's not good, some of these girls charged the governor up to $5,000 an hour. And when he heard that, today Sen. Larry Craig said, 'I would've done the guy for free -- This is more government waste. We can take care of these problems internally.'"
    --Jay Leno

"Big news, of course, this Friday, President Bush is going to be in New York City to give a speech on the U.S. economy. Speech is made up of only two words -- IT BLOWS."
    --Conan O'Brien

"Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain all claim that they should be the person to answer the phone at the White House if it rings at 3 a.m. ... Meanwhile, most Americans think the White House should just get a receptionist."
    --Conan O'Brien

"John McCain just announced that later this month he might take a trip to Iraq. ... Which might be a bad idea, because the last time McCain went to a war zone we didn't hear from him for five years."
    --Conan O'Brien

"Tonight, Hillary Clinton says the states she's won are bigger than Obama's. I say it's not the size that counts but whether it's shaped like Florida."
    --Stephen Colbert

"I want to make one thing perfectly clear, okay folks, Gov. Spitzer is a friend of the show. That never changes. I've sat next to the guy three times and I didn't pick up on any of this, and I usually have excellent Whore-dar."
    --Stephen Colbert

  36. While the GOP sleepwalks through the Democratic Presidential primaries, they had Denny Hastert's old seat stolen right from under their fat, corrupt arses. When the GOP had the chance to do the same in a special election to replace a democrat in a dem-leaning district. They got skunked by the Dems again.

  37. Have you seen this list? That is one long ass list of scandalous Republicans. And this is just the list of sex scandals. This doesn't take into account the ethics violators, the bribe-takers, the traitors and thieves. Plus, that list doesn't seem to go very far back. As old as Gramps McCain is, we might have to look to cave paintings to find info on his misdeeds. Who knew Arnold has sex with a 16 year old before he joined the GOP. Fits right in, eh?

  38. I found LBH's soul mate. He calls himself Ace of Spades. These is what he has to say about the Spitzer-Vitter controversy (via Sadly, No!):

    FoxNews Breaking: R E S I G N I NG ! ! !
    UNDER INDICTMENT?!
NYT: NY GOV. ELLIOT SPITZER “HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN” PROSTITUTION RING
Update: “Empeeror’s Club” Brothel, Five Fucking Grand A Pop!
    Well hellllloooo, nurse!

Back when the Vitter diaper-momma news hit the fan, this was his take:

Who Gives A Rat’s Ass: Sen. David Vitter Implicated In DC Madam’s Phone Records, Apologies For Error In His Past
Eh. The only thing that will ruin you is being caught with a dead girl or live boy.

No one’s claiming the escorts are dead.

    Ergo, I don’t care.

Then he tries to cover his tracks like LBH:

I know what the liberals are asking: Why is [Spitzer] such a big deal, and Sen. David Vitter’s previous experience with call girls isn’t?

    Shut up, that’s why.

Funny how they all think alike.

  40. John McSame and the Double Talk Express regarding John Hagee:

“I will say that he said that his words were taken out of context, he defends his position. I hope that maybe you’d give him a chance to respond. He says he has never been anti-Catholic, but I repudiate the words that create that impression.”

""There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it 'The Great Whore,' an 'apostate church,' the 'anti-Christ,' and a 'false cult system' . . . . “

    - Catholic League president Bill Donohue

"Islam in general -- those who live by the Koran have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews."

    -John Hagee

"I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God [Katrina] for that.”

  43. Mr. Corn,
There was a recommended diary on DKos that examined the same exit polls which you examined.

Given the higher number of Republicans voting in each of the Dem. primaries since the Republican nomination was wrapped up, and given the fact that Republicans view Ms. Clinton as lying, calculating and "nasty," it's not Dems that want a dishonest nasty candidate. It's just that the Republicans that are crossing over to select HRC over Obama (and thus make it easier to win in the general election) view her as such (nasty & dishonest).

Here's the statistical analysis including an explanation of the methodology.

Posted by: Pandemoniac Author Profile Page | March 13, 2008 7:16 AM

  44. So just to be perfectly clear. LBH doesn't dispute that Gramps McCain started his relationship with Cindy Homewrecker almost a year before he got a divorce. He spins it away as A-OK because he didn't break any laws. LBH finds it distasteful that John Hagee is a gay-hating Catholic-basher; but is fine with the fact that his candidate won't reject this hatemonger's support in the election. He hypocritically doesn't care to hold his candidate to the same ethical level as any other candidate. He doesn't care about a drug adict who has recently been released from a mental instituion making absurd claims about Obama; but he has to repeatedly copy and paste that nonsense on this blog. He can find no other criticism to repeat of Obama except Rezko, Rezko, Rezko and every article that he copies and pastes here has a statement making it clear that Obama has not been implicated in any wrongdoing.

Fine. As long as we're clear.

  45. "Hows his lead with the hispanics bro? You're like in the minority of a minority group"
Posted by: LBH March 12, 2008 7:14 PM

Nope, I'm a minority in the majority. More people want Obama than either Gramps McBush or HRC. When the general election comes around, hispanics will rally around Obama just like they will around every other Dem candidate. The GOP made sure of that. The GOP= Dead. Man. Walking

Federal Budget Deficit Swells on Record Spending

"Pandes new Democratic Congress doing the will of the people~ spending more now than the Republicans did, how refreshing!"
Posted by: LBH March 12, 2008 7:39 PM

"One of the reasons the deficit was running higher was related to a calendar issue, the Congressional Budget Office said. Because March 1 fell on weekend, payments that the government would ordinarily have made in March were instead made at the end of February. That caused spending to be higher in February, contributing to the larger budget deficit."

"The White House predicts that the deficit this year will increase to $410 billion, as the economic slowdown cuts into tax revenues. Many analysts predict economic growth will be feeble in the January-to-March quarter; a growing number believe the economy is actually shrinking now. Under one rough rule, the economy would need to contract for six straight months to be considered in a recession"

    From the Washington post.

Add on the 210+ Billion for the idiotic war of choice in Iraq sold on lies and lining the pockets of Cheney and his friends with $$$$. Add on the 160 Billion to fix the economy that Bush has destroyed and the deficit is now Bush's deficit.

"Spitzer resigned in shame today, dude~ guess I was right and you were wrong but whos keeping score anyway, Oh wait you are! Ha ha ha!"

  46. What can one do with a troll that thinks a persons religion or their kids are a necessary part of political discussion? Comments about diapers? Comments about what church a person attends? Personal attacks, Ad Hominem and blather does nothing to elevate the discussion nor does it make a point.

    "I was wrong about what?"

    Nothing,

What has the troll been right about? Nothing.

  48. Countdown Special Comment: Sen. Clinton, “This is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact.”

Senator, as it has reached its apex in their tone-deaf, arrogant, and insensitive reaction to the remarks of Geraldine Ferraro… your own advisers are slowly killing your chances to become President.

Senator, their words, and your own, are now slowly killing the chances for any Democrat to become President.

In your tepid response to this Ferraro disaster, you may sincerely think you are disenthralling an enchanted media, and righting an unfair advance bestowed on Senator Obama.

You may think the matter has closed with Representative Ferraro’s bitter, almost threatening resignation.

But in fact, Senator, you are now campaigning, as if Barack Obama were the Democrat, and you… were the Republican.

  49. Pew Poll Finds Americans Unsure of Iraq Death Toll

WASHINGTON Fewer people know how many U.S. troops have died in the war in Iraq, a poll showed Wednesday.

Only 28 percent correctly said that about 4,000 Americans have died in the war, according to a survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

That’s down from last August, when 54 percent gave the accurate casualty figure, which was about 3,500 dead at the time. In previous Pew surveys dating to 2004, about half have correctly given the rough figure for the approximate number of deaths at the time.

If the M$M were doing their job people would at least know how many troops have died .
