What's wrong with the following headline from the front page of Monday's Washington Post?
Clinton Tests Out Populist Approach
Answer: A true populist doesn't have to test out a populist approach. But this is what so often happens in the Democratic Party. A candidate finds himself or herself in the rough and they reach for the populist nine iron. Let me see if I can get out trouble with this club. Al Gore got all populist in the closing days of the 2000 presidential contest, noting he would fight for us against them--the drug companies, health insurance companies, and the like. (You know, all the folks who bought superboxes at the Democratic convention that year in the Staples Center.) Michael Dukakis veered similarly toward the end of his campaign against George H.W. Bush in 1988. Neither ended up in the White House.
It's not that populism is bad politics; it's that phony (or halfhearted or last-minute) populism is no guarantee of success. For Hillary Clinton to don the mantle of heavy-breathing populism a this stage is not all that convincing. She and her husband never were full-fledged members of that Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. In 1992, Bill, a leader of the conservative-leaning, pro-business Democratic Leadership Council, did run with a quasi-populist agenda of "Putting People First"--which he jettisoned after entering the White House in favor of a Fed-friendly close-the-deficit governing policy. With Hillary by his side, he pushed for Nafta--which was passionately opposed by populists within the party. (These days, Hillary Clinton tries disingenuously to distance herself from the treaty, maintaining it was negotiated by President George H.W. Bush--and not acknowledging that her husband led a major drive to get it passed in Congress over objections from labor unions and Democrats.) And when Hillary Clinton put together her health care reform package, she tried at first to co-opt or appease the health care industry, while other Dems advocated a more confrontational strategy. Her record as a populist is a slight bit thin.
The Post reports:
Eager to recapture the white, working-class voters who favored her in some of the early primaries but who have since shifted to Sen. Barack Obama, Clinton traded her usual wonky style this weekend for a fiery, populist tone in speeches in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.
Instead of giving precise policy details, she repeatedly pointed her finger skyward, declared that Americans "got shafted under President Bush" and cast herself as a fighter, as Edwards often described himself, promising to help most Americans, not just the "wealthy and the connected."
So a voter can fairly ask, where was all this anger before? Why now? Is there any way not to see this as a cynical ploy motivated by recent primary results and present polls?
The paper goes on:
In an appearance here Sunday afternoon, she mocked Obama's hopeful rhetoric, declaring that it is not the answer to fighting entrenched interests.
"I could stand up here and say, 'Let's just get everybody together, let's get unified, the sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect,' " she said, as people cheered and laughed. "You are not going to wave a magic wand and have the special interests disappear."
She wants to bash those special interests. Yet her campaign strategy has been crafted by Mark Penn, whose day job is to assist corporationsso they can game the system in Washington and elsewhere. Much more so than Barack Obama, Clinton has made use of lobbyists as fundraisers and staffers. Her aversion to corporate special interests was not that strong when she was organizing her campaign and looking forward to a front-runner's trot to victory in the Democratic contest.
Hillary Clinton clearly wants to regain the support of blue-collar Dems. In recent weeks, exit polls have showed that Obama has made dramatic inroads into this bloc, which did seem to be on Clinton's side earlier in the race. And, no doubt, she is still hoping to get a thumb's up from John Edwards, who has not endorsed either Clinton or Obama. (As I previously noted, Edwards will have a tough time awarding his seal of approval to Clinton over Obama after referring to her as a "corporate Democrat" and a force for the status quo.)
If Clinton wants to prove she's a populist, she could ask Penn and the corporate lobbyists who work for her to vacate the premises. But it's difficult to take her late conversion to populism seriously when the guy behind it is making millions of dollars working for the special interests she decries.

Comments
DC,
Great piece. Many excellent points.
"She and her husband never were full-fledged members of that Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. "
And that is where I have never warmed up to HRC.
Thanks

It appears to me that HIllary is aims to convey compassion in order to contrast herself with Obama's "cool" style. I see this particularly in the television commercials. Obama seems to be wrapped up in "the dream" of how things could/should be. His campaign has been likened to as "a movement." Obama conveys concern for the country's direction, but he does not convey concern for people on personal level. Hillary is shown giving out a lot of hugs, whereas Obama is depicted as a rock star. I think her message is: who is gonna help you?

'Twould seem to me that the term "populism" is morhping into "socialism" or even worse - the dreaded "fascism" (exalts nation above the individual, stands for a centralized autocratic government, severe economic regimentation, forcible suppression of opposition [try opting out of public schooling, social security, universal health care, etc.])

Israel aside, Obama romps in global primary
Hillary Rodham Clinton was the choice in Israel, but Barack Obama easily won an international primary.
Expatriate Americans gave Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, 66 percent of the vote to 33 percent for his Senate colleague from New York in the Democrats Abroad Global Primary held Feb. 5-12.
Clinton took Israel, which is home to an estimated 200,000 U.S. citizens, 54 percent to 44 percent.
The results determine the allocation of 4 1/2 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention in August. With his victory, Obama captured 2 1/2 delegates and Clinton two. Another 2 1/2 delegates will be determined in April at the Democrats Abroad Global Convention. In addition, Democrats Abroad holds four super delegate votes.
Balloting took place by mail, fax and at voting centers in more than 30 countries. For the first time, voting was also available on the Internet through a secure system. Ballots were cast from 164 countries and territories, according to a Democrats Abroad statement.
Republicans do not hold a global primary.

Interesting results.

Has LBH been posting his income on this blog again as if anyone gives a shit about how much money he makes or doesn't make, as if it gives his arguments any more merit, as if he can then claim himself a success?

The next president should open up the Bush Administration's record
By now no one expects the Bush Administration to make itself accountable for its controversial and possibly illegal practices. But the next President will have a unique opportunity to reveal what has been kept hidden for the last seven years. Secrecy watchdog Steven Aftergood suggests a few questions for the presidential candidates about their willingness to disclose just what the current Administration has done.

'Saturday Night Live' Mocks Obama Mania, Praises Clinton
The most recent episode of "Saturday Night Live" featured a sketch parodying the media as head over heels for Sen. Barack Obama and a rant by former cast member Tina Fey endorsing Hillary Clinton as a "b---- ... who gets stuff done."
The show's opening sketch was a mock televised CNN debate between Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Obama (D-Ill.) - portrayed by actors Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen respectively. Cast members parodying three reporters asked Clinton absurdly difficult questions while fawning over Obama.

SNL has it right, Hillary is by far more qualified than Obama lite.

Islamic Links on Obama Web Site Stir Criticism
By Fred Lucas
A page for Muslim supporters of Sen. Barack Obama -- hosted on Obama's presidential campaign Web site -- promotes events sponsored by controversial Islamic groups.
Muslim Americans for Obama '08, found on Obama's main campaign site, allows users to create their own page through a "My Obama" option. The Muslim Americans for Obama page also links to a Web site that features lectures by people who have expressed radical Islamic views in the past.
A portion of the "Muslim Americans for Obama" page lists proposals to establish a Muslim American advisory group on U.S. foreign policy; provide prayer areas in public places such as malls, airports, universities and government buildings; institute a law to allow Muslim employees to take time from their work day for prayer; and institute a law against harassment of Muslim women in public area

Statement from Larry Sinclair concerning alleged failed polygraph(the Obama/Sinclair continues..)
The Way it is ^ | 2/24/08 | Larry Sinclair/staff
STATEMENT FROM LARRY SINCLAIR
I am making this statement regarding the claims recently made against me and attributted to the WASHINGTON POST.
FIRST
The claims that I have an “extensive record of drug convictions” is in fact completely false and according to both the national new desk and city desk at the Washington Post has never been reported by anyone employed at this newspaper.
SECOND
The claims made that I “have been investigated eight times over the past 25 years for trying to secure money through “black male” and two of those involving politicians in IL and IN” also is in fact false and according to the Washington Post has never been reported by anyone employed at this newspaper.
THIRD
Dan Parisi of Whitehouse dot com has decided to ignore the conditions and agreement we entered into regarding the polygraph examination. Mr. Parisis has failed to provide the identity and contact information on the second Expert and in doing so has never obtained any agreement from me for using this individual.
Mr. Parisi failed to provide information that I recently received from emails from people I do not even know, which shows Dr. Edward Ira Gelb has in fact misrepresented his own credentials before a case filed in front of the US Supreme Court. (attached below)
fyi
www.antipolygraph.com/articles/article-036.shtml Gelb has publicly claimed to hold a Ph.D. degree in psychology since at least 1996. I***997, he represented himself as a Ph.D. to the highest court in the land -- the United States Supreme Court -- as a co-signer of the Committee of Concerned Social Scientists' amicus brief in U.S. v. Scheffer, where he is listed as "Ed Gelb, Ph.D." No, the "LaSalle University" that awarded Gelb his "doctorate" turns out to be a defunct, unaccredited diploma mill in Mandeville, Louisiana that was owned and operated by one Thomas James Kirk, A.K.A. Thomas McPherson.
I***996, LaSalle was raided by the FBI, and i***997 Kirk pled guilty to federal fraud charges. (For more on the bogus LaSalle University, Mr. Edward I. Gelb is no Ph.D., and he should stop masquerading as such.
In addition Mr. Parisi and his assistant refused to inform or allow me to be present during their meetings with Dr. Gelb in his office before, during and after the exams. Mr. Parisi and his assistant spent approximately two hours behind closed doors with Dr. Gelb before I was even introduced to him. During the examination process Dr. Gelb printed something off his computer and left the room telling me he would be back in five, only to return some 30 to 45 minutes later with Parisi’s assistant and an associate of Dr. Gelbs and then asked me to step out side for another 20 minutes before calling me back in to proceed with the exam.
FOURTH
Tonight (2-24-08) after Mr. Parisi refused to respond to my emails I posted on Whitehouse dot com the fact that Parisi this afternoon claimed he had not sent me copy of the results because he had not received them. Shortly after making that statement this afternoon Parisi’s assistant called saying they would fax the results in 15 minute, needless to say that never happened. Later Parisi claimed he had only then received a handwritten report faxed this date to him from Dr. Gelb and that he would wait to fax me the typed report.
If Mr. Parisi fails to comply with our agreement by Monday 2-25-08 I will post all email communications with him concerning this matter and which clearly state the conditions for this arrangement. These emails will clearly show Mr. Parisi did not follow our agreement and I will consider at that time what course of action should be taken. It is only natural that I would become suspicious of Mr. Parisi after finding out he has misrepresented this expert, he has claimed I was examined by two (2) experts of which I agreed and yet I only met one and still have not been given the contact information to this date on the second.
It needs to be made perfectly clear that I have from the very beginning demand all of this be done openly and with credible, unbiased, and apolitical individuals. These facts about Dr. Gelb make it hard for me to believe that Mr. Parisi can claim this person is unbiased and credible when he has misrepresented himself before the highest court in this Country.
Mr. Parisi’s claims that I approved both experts is untrue because I was never given this person whole name or any contact information on him/her. I was simply told Gordo something in Salt Lake City.
Thank you,
Larry Sinclair 2-24-08

Obama worked with terrorist
Senator helped fund organization that rejects 'racist' Israel's existence
By Aaron Klein

Sen. Barack Obama
JERUSALEM – The board of a nonprofit organization on which Sen. Barack Obama served as a paid director alongside a confessed domestic terrorist granted funding to a controversial Arab group that mourns the establishment of Israel as a "catastrophe" and supports intense immigration reform, including providing drivers licenses and education to illegal aliens.
The co-founder of the Arab group in question, Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, also has held a fundraiser for Obama. Khalidi is a harsh critic of Israel, has made statements supportive of Palestinian terror and reportedly has worked on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was involved in anti-Western terrorism and was labeled by the State Department as a terror group.
In 2001, the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as a group helping the disadvantaged, provided a $40,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, for which Khalidi's wife, Mona, serves as president. The Fund provided a second grant to the AAAN for $35,000 in 2002.
Obama was a director of the Woods Fund board from 1999 to Dec. 11, 2002, according to the Fund's website. According to tax filings, Obama received compensation of $6,000 per year for his service in 1999 and 2001.
Obama served on the Wood's Fund board alongside William C. Ayers, a member of the Weathermen terrorist group which sought to overthrow of the U.S. government and took responsibility for bombing the U.S. Capitol in 1971.

The Date - August 23, 1305
The Place - Smithfield Green/London.
The Event - The Execution of Sir William Wallace
As William is being drawn and quartered, he gasps out to the Lord High Executioner, who intones, "The prisoner wishes to say a word."
Mustering his last strength, William cries out, - "Universal Health Coverage"?
No, he cries out - "Freedom".
Where are the freedoms going that we have enjoyed for over two hundred years? 'Twould seem that the government now owes us everything (healthcare, jobs, pensions, etc.), all to the detriment of our freedoms.
(What is the line about the person trading freedom for security usually losing both?)
We have perverted the inauguration speech of John F. Kennedy. ("Ask not..."). And the important thing to remember about the speech is that he referred to others doing for their "country", not their "government". And most certainly not either their "government" or "country" doing for them.
