Digging into Huckabee's Past Unearths Extreme Rhetoric...and Grisly Details about His Son and a Dog

Skeletons--it's hard to keep them in the closet when you run for president, especially if you start to do well. That's what Mike Huckabee has been finding out at hyperspeed in recent weeks. His past statements on religion, AIDS, and the family have come under close watch. His decisions as Arkansas governor are being dissected; his ethical lapses are being studied. At Mother Jones, we discovered that that his presidential campaign and the churches where he served as a pastor for twelve years will not provide copies of the sermons he delivered. GIven that Huckabee campaigns as a self-proclaimed "Christian leader," his actions as "Christian leader" are certainly legitimate subjects of examination. Why is he sitting on them?

I did find one quasi-mega-sermon. Yesterday, I posted piece on a 1998 book Huckabee wrote that was filled with inflammatory fundamentalist rhetoric. In that book, Huckabee equated environmentalism with pornography and associated homosexuality with necrophilia. He dismissed those who advocate workplace equality for women. He denounced those Christians who accept a "misguided version of 'tolerance.'" He decried unnamed "modern government-sponsored social engineers" and claimed that "virtually every dollar poured into" government social programs is wasted. He also declared that people who do not believe in God tend to be "immoral" and tend to engage in "destructive behavior."

The book's content was not shocking, coming from a Bible-thumpinig fundamentalist. But Huckabee is trying to pitch himself as a friendly fellow who, as he claimed in the last debate, can unite a "very polarized country." Huckabee is free to believe whatever he wants, but it's hard to see how a social conservative advocating such extreme views could bring together a divided society.

There's still plenty of digging to be done in the fields of Huckabee. Who knows what will be unearthed? Yesterday, my former co-author Michael Isikoff and a Newsweek colleague of his broke the story that Huckabee, when he was governor in 1998, allegedly blocked a criminal investigation of his then seventeen-year-old son. David Huckabee had been accused of killing a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp, where he was a counselor. The head of the state police at the time told Newsweek that Huckabee's office leaned on him to stop any inquiry. And the FBI chief in Little Rock back then also said Huckabee attempted to stop an investigation of his son. No charges were ever filed. Huckabee denied the accounts of these two men.

The Newsweek story didn't detail the grisly details of the dog-killing incident. But a letter sent to the head of the Boy Scouts in 1998 by the Animal Legal Defense Fund did include the specifics:

It has come to my attention that David Huckabee and Clayton Friday, two scout counselors, have admitted to the brutal killing of a stray dog at Camp Pioneer on July 11, 1998, and have been protected by the Caddo Area Council as well as Camp Pioneer authorities. The two boys allegedly hung a dog by his/her neck, throwing the body over a railing to a twenty foot drop. After realizing that this did not kill the dog, they slit his/her throat, and stoned the dog to death.

Nice boys. No doubt, throughout this (alleged) event, they were thinking, What would Jesus do? ("Yeah, stone the dog!") Now, are the sins of the son the responsibility of the father? They sure are--if the father intervened in a criminal matter to protect the son. And by the way, the 1998 Huckabee book that I referenced above was called Kids Killing Kids. In that book, Huckabee claimed that moral decline in America was producing the kid-killers who conduct murder sprees in schools. The only way to address this problem, he argued, was to make religion and faith the cornerstone of American culture and to do so within the family. Hmmm, what went wrong in the Huckabee household?

Loads of Democrats would be delighted to see Huckabee trounce the other Republicans. For then, they will have months and months to keep on digging and to ask many, many questions about the minister-turned-politican.

  1. DC,

  2. Huckabee's Chairman Hid Payoff Secret

The pundits on CNN’s “Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” were unanimous: Republican campaign strategist Ed Rollins was a great guy and his hiring as national chairman for Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign gave it a solid jolt of credibility.

But Blitzer’s panel of journalists on Dec. 14 didn’t seem to either know or care that Rollins has withheld evidence since 1991 about the identity of a top Filipino politician who admitted delivering an illegal $10 million cash payment to Ronald Reagan’s 1984 campaign from Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Rollins, who ran Reagan’s reelection campaign, mentioned the admission in his 1996 book, Bare Knuckles and Back Rooms, recounting how the Filipino casually asserted over drinks that he had carried the money in a suitcase to a Republican lobbyist who was representing the Reagan campaign.

"I was the guy who gave the ten million from Marcos to your campaign," the Filipino told Rollins. "I was the guy who made the arrangements and delivered the cash personally. ...It was a personal gift from Marcos to Reagan."

In his book, Rollins described this stunning news with a light touch. The first thought that raced through his head, he wrote, was "Cash? Holy shit."

  3. Huckabee Helped Free Confessed Murderer Because He Became a Christian [VIDEO]

Last night on NBC Nightly News there was a brief investigative report looking into Mike Huckabee's proclivity to intervene on behalf of rapists and killers when he was governor of Arkansas. Until now I had only heard of the case of Wayne Dumond, who infamously raped and murdered again after Huckabee lobbied for his release. This report begins by looking at another case, which involves a man who once worked on Huckabee's property. Turns out Huckabee granted clemency two times more than the three previous Arkansas governors combined, which wouldn't be that big a deal to me if it weren't for the fact that according to this report his main motivation for almost all of his clemency granting was religion. That's right, the majority of these inmates claimed to have found religion and were backed by ministers. This is a yet another example of Huckabee's incompetence and raises serious questions about his judgment if not his sanity. Check out the video to your right for more.

  4. Huckabee equated environmentalism with pornography

    associated homosexuality with necrophilia

dismissed those who advocate workplace equality for women

denounced those Christians who accept a "misguided version of 'tolerance.'"

decried unnamed "modern government-sponsored social engineers"

claimed that "virtually every dollar poured into" government social programs is wasted

declared that people who do not believe in God tend to be "immoral" and engage in "destructive behavior."

None of that bothers me but using his authority to intercede in the prosecution of his son for killing a dog, now that's inhumane! /snark off

  6. Blank Check for Afghanistan Passes, Iraq Funds to Come

Under a cloud of frustration, the House of Representatives passed an omnibus spending bill on Monday night that contains $31 billion for the war in Afghanistan, with the expectation Iraq war funding will be added in the Senate. Additionally, the bill submits to most of the president's requests on domestic spending.

Unlike the $50 billion Democratic war funding bill proposed in November, which was defeated in the Senate, the new bill contains no provisions for a troop withdrawal.

  8. The most ethical Congress?

Liberals admit using earmarks for re-election

    Freedom Talks blog ^ | 12-18-07 | Brendan Steinhauser

Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) is calling for an immediate suspension of the earmarking process after learning that a House Democrat suggested to Speaker Nancy Pelosi that additional earmarks could assist the campaigns of vulnerable Democrats. "Inherently, we understand that this earmark process is not equitable… There are a few examples of where your help could significantly assist a few members in highly contested races," wrote Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick. Want to ask Speaker Pelosi whether she believes granting earmarks to re-elect Democrats is ethical and an appropriate use of tax dollars? 9. Advocacy Groups, Jeanne White-Ginder Still Waiting to Meet with Gov. Huckabee

After two letters by the Human Rights Campaign and The AIDS Institute, the Huckabee campaign has not responded

    12/18/2007

WASHINGTON – One week after requesting to meet with Republican presidential candidate Governor Mike Huckabee, Jeanne White-Ginder, the mother of Ryan White, the Human Rights Campaign or The AIDS Institute, still have not heard from Gov. Huckabee or his campaign. The meeting was called in response to Gov. Huckabee’s 1992 remarks, that he refused to repudiate, when he said people living with HIV and AIDS should have been "isolated" even after it was determined the virus was not spread through casual contact. The morning after HRC and The AIDS Institute sent a letter to the Huckabee campaign requesting a meeting, the Governor said, "I would be very willing to meet with them." 11. Big Money Conservatives Do Not Heart Huckabee

With Mike Huckabee's continuing surge, the Republican Party now has an Iowa front-runner whose religious beliefs are virtually identical to those of George Bush. He's anti-choice, born-again, against gay-marriage, and gets political advice directly from God.

So why is the Republican establishment suddenly in a state of near-apoplexy about Mike Huckabee? Shouldn't they be happy? They've been cultivating evangelicals and fundamentalists for 30 years. Now they finally have a candidate who's truly part of the movement. So what's the problem?

Actually, that is the problem. The evangelical crowd was fine when it was just a resource to be cynically exploited every few years in demagogic anti-gay get-out-the-vote campaigns. But now the holy-rolling monster the GOP's Dr. Frankensteins have created has thrown off the shackles, fled the lab, and is currently leading in Iowa. And the party doesn't know what to do.

It's actually fun to watch the consternation. Ross Douthat has dubbed this feeling "Huckenfreude," which he defines as "pleasure derived from the outrage of prominent conservative pundits over the rising poll numbers of Mike Huckabee."

If Huckabee can’t get the big money behind him - there is no passion for his candidacy. .

  13. Interestingly, all this material has been out in the public record for some time, even before Spiky unearthed the Animal Legal Defense Letter.

The question you have to ask is, where did David Huckabee and his cohort get the knife to slit the dog's throat? Because the answer has to be: Their Scout knives.

Lovely. No wonder the Scouts fired them. A Scout is "kind," you see...

  14. Something else that hasn't come out yet - Huckabee is giving the impression that his remarkable weight loss was due to diet and exercise, when actually it is extremely probable that it was due to bariatric surgery. See

    http://plutarch01.wordpress.com/2007/12/13/huckabees-weight-loss-scam/

His weight loss remains real, but loses its herioc quality, if this conclusion is correct.

[Brad DeLong's blog brought this issue to my attention.]
