ActBlue's Response Shows Better Record

| | Comments (0)

In a post earlier today concerning the Democratic activist group ActBlue, I used numbers that require a clarification.

In that piece, I noted that candidates who receive the most campaign money through that Web-based contribution conduit often lose their elections. This conclusion was based on numbers available on ActBlue's candidate directory. The point of the piece was that South Carolina Democrat Rob Miller will need more than just money to beat Republican Rep. Joe "You Lie!" Wilson -- though, of course, money is a essential for viability, which no doubt is at least part of ActBlue's raison d'etre.

But a response from ActBlue -- which includes its internal numbers for candidates, some of which cannot be found through a routine search of their data -- provides a different picture.

Buffett Tops Rocker Rep.'s Playlist

Jimmy Buffett occupies the No. 1 spot on Rep. John Hall's campaign playlist, as the second-term New York Democrat -- the onetime frontman for the band Orleans -- has scheduled a fundraiser for Buffett's Sept. 5 concert at the Nissan Pavilion in Northern Virginia.

But Buffett, who has given money in the past to Democratic candidates and causes -- including Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee -- hasn't ponied up for Hall in the past, according to a review of CQ MoneyLine records.

Perhaps Hall's fundraiser will spark a change in attitude.

Thanks to the Sunlight Foundation's indispensable "party time" Web site for info on the event.

With new Minnesota Sen. Al Franken's swearing in (not swearing at) slated for just past noon on Tuesday (h/t CQ's Kate Hunter), Notepad wondered whether there were any silly solons in the past who could give Franken advice on the transition from smart-alecky stand-up to Senate soliloquist.

Not in the Senate, says Betty Koed, the chamber's assistant historian.

The National Jewish Democratic Council notes that the end of the Minnesota Senate race means that the Senate will be without a Jewish Republican for the first time in more than 50 years.

Technically, Norm Coleman's term ended with the close of the last Congress, but the basic point remains. As the Republican Party's old northern liberal wing disappears, so, too, do the Jewish politicans who felt at home there. Coleman will be succeeded by another Jewish lawmaker, Al Franken. But Franken, like all but one of the Jews in Congress, is a Democrat.

Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia is the only Jewish Republican in Congress. Only a few years ago, he had the company of Coleman, party-switching Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and even -- to some degree -- fellow Virginia Sen. George Allen.

With a long career in comedy, there are many things Sen.-elect Al Franken has said and written that shouldn't be repeated on the Senate floor.

But here are a handful of Franken quotes Notepad hopes to hear anew from the Senate gallery -- whether from Franken, D-Minn., or anyone else with speaking priviliges. And thanks to the almost-senator's long career in television, these are quotes you can both read and hear:
