ACORN and the Stimulus

So how’s the quest for bipartisanship going? Let’s put it this way: House Republican Leader John A. Boehner just resurrected the Republicans’ grudge match against their favorite villain of the 2008 campaign: the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

That’s right — the same group they used to try to defeat Barack Obama last year.

Remember the glory days of the campaign, when Republicans were accusing the group of registering pretend voters to help Obama win the election?

Nothing really came of that, of course, and the issue seemed to drop right off the map.

But this afternoon, Boehner’s office sent out an e-mail alert warning that the stimulus bill approved by the House Appropriations Committee this week — part of the overall package the House will vote on next week — includes $4 billion for “neighborhood stabilization activities” that could go to groups like ACORN.

“What does this have to do with job creation? Are Congressional Democrats really going to borrow money from our children and grandchildren to give handouts to ACORN in the name of economic ‘stimulus?’ ” the e-mail asked.

This time, Boehner is trying to use the group’s name to attack House Democrats, not Obama. But at a time when they’re trying to get Obama to listen to their ideas on the stimulus, it’s a good bet that hauling out one of the most controversial weapons of the campaign won’t help their case.

Coming up next: how the stimulus will help William Ayers.

  1. In the first version of the financial bailout legislation (TARP) the Democrats wanted to give ACORN a large percentage of the proceeds from the eventual sale of the assets of the process of the bail out. We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars.

This is part of the Democrat pay back to those who contributed to Obama's campaign, and this is also the motivation for the new 850 billion stimulus. In case you did not understand this, the Democrats in Congress are borrowing money to pay back those who contributed (mostly illegally) to the Obama campaign. So it means that the taxpayers get to pay Obama's campaign expenses.

Neat, isn't it, and Republicans get to pay too.,
